Dog life guide
How much does a dog cost in India per month, built from your dog's weight instead of a national average
Two full budgets, Rs 1,531 and Rs 14,059 a month, with the arithmetic shown so you can swap in your own dog, your own bag of food and your own clinic.
Quick answer
How much does a dog cost in India per month depends mostly on what your dog weighs, because food is the largest recurring line and food is bought by the kilo. On prices read on 20 October 2026, feeding a 5 kg dog costs Rs 427 to Rs 634 a month and a 30 kg dog Rs 1,582 to Rs 7,710, using the makers' own feeding charts. Add tick prevention at Rs 550 to Rs 760 a month whatever the dog's size, a Rs 500 Delhi licence once a year, and vaccination. Grooming, walking and boarding are choices, not costs.
This guide is general information for Indian pet owners and is not a diagnosis. Always consult a registered veterinarian near you before acting on anything you read here, and treat any sudden change in your pet's condition as urgent.
Three numbers, not one
Budget three numbers for a dog in India, not one. The monthly recurring bill, the one-off costs that nearly all land in the first year, and the veterinary bill you have not planned for are three different problems, and a single monthly figure hides all three.
Every page that currently ranks for this question gives one range and stops. Supertails puts the monthly cost at Rs 3,000 to Rs 11,000. VOSD puts it at Rs 3,000 to Rs 10,000 and beyond. Google's own AI overview on 20 October 2026 gave Rs 2,000 to Rs 18,000 and said food accounts for 40 to 60 percent of the total. None of them shows how the number was built, so none of them can be checked or adjusted.
This page does the opposite. It gives you the arithmetic and labels every input, so you can swap your own dog, your own bag of food and your own clinic into it and get a figure that is actually yours.
What each of the three buckets holds
- Recurring monthly cost: food, tick and flea prevention, the annual licence and vaccination spread across twelve months, and anything you have chosen to buy every month such as grooming, a dog walker or insurance.
- One-off costs: municipal registration, the puppy vaccination course, sterilisation, a crate, bowls, a bed and a lead. These are first year expenses, and the second year does not repeat them.
- The unbudgeted bill: tick fever, a torn cruciate ligament, a swallowed toy, boarding charges every time you travel, a behaviourist, or a chewed rental deposit. This is not a monthly line, and treating it as one is why people are caught out.
Only the first bucket belongs in a monthly cost of a dog. The second belongs in a first-year plan. The third belongs in a savings account.
A price is a fact with a shelf life. Every rupee figure below was read on a named page on 20 October 2026, and the page and the pack size are given beside it. Treat anything older than a few months as a starting point rather than a quote, and re-check the two or three lines that dominate your own budget.
Start with your dog's weight, because food is the biggest line
Start a dog budget with the dog's weight, because food is the largest recurring line and food is bought by the kilo. A 5 kg Shih Tzu and a 30 kg Labrador are not the same budget, and no national average bridges them.
Two published charts give you the daily amount, and they agree with each other. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association publishes a one-page calorie chart for healthy adult dogs in ideal body condition, calculated from the 2006 National Research Council maintenance energy requirement, using 130 kcal times bodyweight in kilograms to the power 0.75 for an active adult and 95 kcal for an inactive one. Pedigree India publishes its own table that goes one step further and converts those calories into grams of dry food a day.
| Ideal body weight | Pedigree daily calories | WSAVA daily calorie range | Grams a day on 100 percent dry food | Kilograms a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 kg | 318 kcal | 280 to 351 kcal | 100 g | 3.00 kg |
| 10 kg | 534 kcal | 470 to 590 kcal | 165 g | 4.95 kg |
| 12 kg | 613 kcal | 540 to 677 kcal | 190 g | 5.70 kg |
| 20 kg | 898 kcal | 790 to 993 kcal | 275 g | 8.25 kg |
| 30 kg | 1,218 kcal | 1,080 to 1,346 kcal | 370 g | 11.10 kg |
| 40 kg | 1,511 kcal | 1,340 to 1,670 kcal | 460 g | 13.80 kg |
Every Pedigree figure in that table sits inside the WSAVA range for the same weight, which is worth saying out loud because it means the food half of your budget rests on two independent sources that match. A brand's feeding chart is often treated as marketing. On quantity, at least, this one checks out against the veterinary reference.
Royal Canin gives a third reading and it lands in the same place. Its Maxi Adult chart, for large breed dogs of 26 to 44 kg, puts a 30 kg dog at medium activity on 307 g a day at low activity, 355 g at medium and 404 g at high. Pedigree's 370 g for the same dog is within 4 percent of Royal Canin's medium-activity figure.
Two mistakes in Pedigree's own table, and how to spot them
Use the chart, and read it with your eyes open. Two rows on it are internally inconsistent, and both were still live on 20 October 2026. The 22 kg row gives 195 g a day of dry food, which sits between 275 g at 20 kg and 315 g at 24 kg, so it is roughly 100 g too low. The mixed-diet column at 40 kg reads 600 plus 270, lower than the 600 plus 300 given for a smaller 38 kg dog.
The calorie column is right in both cases, at 965 kcal and 1,511 kcal. Only the gram conversions slipped. If a row in any feeding chart does not rise smoothly with the one above it, trust the calories and work the grams out yourself from the energy density printed on your bag.
Both charts are written for ideal body weight, not current weight. WSAVA asks the veterinary team to score body condition, a measure of fat stores, at every visit, and publishes the charts for doing it. Feeding an overweight dog to its actual weight locks in the extra cost and the extra weight together. Our page on obesity in dogs and cats covers the health side, and your veterinarian should set the target weight. This page is general information and does not replace veterinary advice.
What a kilo of dog food cost on 20 October 2026
A kilo of complete dry dog food cost between Rs 142 and Rs 966 in India on 20 October 2026, a 6.8-fold spread that depends on the brand and, nearly as much, on the size of the bag you buy it in.
Nine listings, three brands, two Indian retailers, all read on the same day. The right-hand column is the one that decides your dog food cost, and it is the one no product page puts first.
| Product | Retailer | Pack | Price | MRP | Rupees a kilo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drools Chicken and Egg Adult | Supertails | 20 kg plus 1 kg free, 21 kg | Rs 2,992 | Rs 3,400 | Rs 142 |
| Drools Chicken and Egg Adult | Supertails | 20 kg | Rs 3,495 | Rs 3,799 | Rs 175 |
| Drools Chicken and Egg Adult | Supertails | 2.8 kg | Rs 605 | Rs 650 | Rs 216 |
| Pedigree Chicken and Vegetables Adult | Supertails | 20 kg | Rs 3,319 | Rs 3,900 | Rs 166 |
| Pedigree Chicken and Vegetables Adult | Supertails | 10 kg | Rs 2,034 | Rs 2,390 | Rs 203 |
| Pedigree Chicken and Vegetables Adult | Supertails | 3 kg | Rs 634 | Rs 725 | Rs 211 |
| Royal Canin Maxi Adult | Heads Up For Tails | 14 kg | Rs 9,724 | Rs 11,050 | Rs 695 |
| Royal Canin Maxi Adult | Heads Up For Tails | 4 kg | Rs 3,176 | Rs 3,610 | Rs 794 |
| Royal Canin Maxi Adult | Heads Up For Tails | 1 kg | Rs 966 | Rs 1,050 | Rs 966 |
Bonbeno names those products to source a price, not to recommend one. Which food suits your dog is a conversation with your veterinarian, and our dog diet chart for India covers how to think about it.
The bundle with a free kilo cost less than the plain bag
Buy the bundle. On the same Supertails product page on the same day, the Drools Chicken and Egg Adult pack sold as 20 kg plus 1 kg free cost Rs 2,992, while the plain 20 kg pack cost Rs 3,495. That is Rs 503 less for a kilo more, and it works out at Rs 142 a kilo against Rs 175, a 19 percent saving for scrolling one row further down the same page.
The same pattern repeats on the puppy version. Drools Chicken and Egg Puppy was Rs 1,779 for the 11 kg pack and Rs 2,067 for the 10 kg pack. A kilo more, Rs 288 less.
Small bags carry a 50 percent surcharge
Expect to pay about half as much again per kilo for a small bag. Drools at 2.8 kg worked out at Rs 216 a kilo against Rs 142 in the 21 kg bundle, 52 percent more for the identical food. Pedigree at 3 kg was Rs 211 a kilo against Rs 166 in the 20 kg bag, 27 percent more. Royal Canin at 1 kg was Rs 966 a kilo against Rs 695 in the 14 kg bag, 39 percent more.
Small-dog owners spend the most per kilo here, and they lose it quietly. A 5 kg dog eats 3 kg a month, so a 3 kg bag looks like the sensible purchase and a 20 kg bag looks absurd. Dry kibble keeps for months in a sealed container, and the storage problem is cheaper to solve than the surcharge.
Both Indian retailers used here print a per-100-gram figure next to the pack price, which is the only number that compares bags honestly. Heads Up For Tails showed Rs 70 per 100 g for both the 10 kg and the 14 kg Royal Canin pack and Rs 97 per 100 g for the 1 kg. Supertails showed Rs 14 per 100 g on the Drools bundle and Rs 17 on the plain bag. Compare those, not the headline discount percentage.
One thing this page could not price. Amazon India returned an HTTP 503 service-unavailable page on this attempt, on 20 October 2026, so no Amazon listing is cited here. A small-breed premium kibble was not priced either, because Royal Canin Maxi Adult is sold for 26 to 44 kg dogs and quoting its per-kilo price against a 5 kg dog would be wrong.
Both retailers here price nationally. A bag of kibble costs the same in Chennai, Kolkata and Ahmedabad as it does in Delhi, which is the first reason your city matters less to this budget than the ranking pages suggest.
Your monthly dog food cost, in one grid
Multiply the kilograms a month from the first table by the rupees a kilo from the second, and your monthly dog food cost falls out. The grid below has already done it at four real price points.
| Ideal body weight | Kilograms a month | At Rs 142 a kg | At Rs 166 a kg | At Rs 211 a kg | At Rs 695 a kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 kg | 3.00 kg | Rs 427 | Rs 498 | Rs 634 | Not sold for this size |
| 10 kg | 4.95 kg | Rs 705 | Rs 821 | Rs 1,046 | Not sold for this size |
| 12 kg | 5.70 kg | Rs 812 | Rs 946 | Rs 1,205 | Not sold for this size |
| 20 kg | 8.25 kg | Rs 1,175 | Rs 1,369 | Rs 1,744 | Not sold for this size |
| 30 kg | 11.10 kg | Rs 1,582 | Rs 1,842 | Rs 2,346 | Rs 7,710 |
| 40 kg | 13.80 kg | Rs 1,966 | Rs 2,290 | Rs 2,916 | Rs 9,585 |
Read the 30 kg row across. The same dog, with the same appetite, costs Rs 1,582 or Rs 7,710 a month to feed depending only on which bag comes through the door. That is a 4.9-fold difference and not one rupee of it is about the dog.
Using Royal Canin's own chart rather than Pedigree's makes almost no difference to the premium figure. At 355 g a day for medium activity, a 30 kg dog eats 10.65 kg a month, which at Rs 695 a kilo is Rs 7,397 Heads Up For Tails.
Across the whole grid the spread runs from Rs 427 for a 5 kg dog on the cheapest bag to Rs 9,585 for a 40 kg dog on the dearest, a factor of 22. Any page that answers this question with a single range has quietly fixed both variables and not told you which values it chose.
Four steps put your own numbers in.
- Weigh the dog, and use the weight it should be rather than the weight it is. Your veterinarian sets that target.
- Read the grams a day off the feeding table on your own bag, or off the maker's website, at your dog's weight and activity level.
- Multiply the grams a day by 30 and divide by 1,000 to get kilograms a month.
- Multiply the kilograms a month by the price per kilo of the bag size you actually buy, not the biggest bag the brand sells.
Do that honestly and the answer will often sit below every figure on page one of Google. That is not an error in the arithmetic. It is what the arithmetic says.
The recurring lines that do not scale with your dog's size
Three recurring lines barely move with the dog's size: tick and flea prevention, the municipal licence, and the consultation fee. Only food really scales, which is why cost by dog size is not the clean story it looks like.
Tick prevention makes the point best. A single fluralaner chew covers 12 weeks at every weight, and the price is set by the weight band on the box.
| Dog weight band | Price for one tablet | MRP | Monthly equivalent over 12 weeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 to 4.5 kg | Rs 1,650 | Rs 1,875 | Rs 550 |
| 4.5 to 10 kg | Rs 1,650 | Rs 1,875 | Rs 550 |
| 10 to 20 kg | Rs 1,791 | Rs 2,063 | Rs 597 |
| 20 to 40 kg | Rs 1,805 | Rs 2,063 | Rs 602 |
| 40 to 56 kg | Rs 2,279 | Rs 2,625 | Rs 760 |
A 30 kg dog's chew costs 9 percent more than a 5 kg dog's chew, while its food costs 3.7 times as much. Scale that across the budget and you get the real shape of it. A small dog saves you money on exactly one line, and it is the line everybody already knew about.
The identical tablet, two prices, 17 percent apart
Compare retailers before you buy a preventive, because the gap is larger than it is on food. The 500 mg chew for a 10 to 20 kg dog was Rs 1,791 at Supertails and Rs 1,525 at PetCentral on 20 October 2026, a difference of Rs 266 on one tablet or Rs 89 every month PetCentral, MSD Bravecto 500mg Chewable…. The two listings even agree on the maximum retail price, at Rs 2,063 and Rs 2,062, so this is a discount gap rather than a different pack.
That product needs a prescription, and both listings say so. Which parasite preventive your dog should be on, and how often, is a veterinary decision that depends on where you live and how humid it is. Our guide to tick prevention for dogs in India covers the monsoon pattern and the choices.
The licence is a legal line, not an optional one
Register the dog, because it is the law and it is cheap. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi charges Rs 500 to register a pet dog and Rs 500 again to renew, with the certificate valid for a maximum of one year and tied to the anti-rabies vaccination date. Miss the renewal and a late fee of Rs 100 a month applies after a one-month grace period. The portal states the requirement comes from section 399 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act 1957.
Spread across twelve months that is Rs 42, which is less than a third of what the retailer gap on one tick tablet costs you. Fees and procedures differ by city, and our guide to dog registration in India sets out each one.
Deworming belongs on this list too and is not priced here, because the interval is set by the dog's age and exposure rather than by a fixed monthly schedule.
What a vet consultation fee costs, government against private
A vet consultation fee for a dog is Rs 30 at a government veterinary institution in Chandigarh and Rs 799 at a private chain clinic in Delhi, a 27-fold difference for what the tariff calls the same thing.
Both numbers are published by the people charging them. The Directorate of Animal Husbandry, Union Territory of Chandigarh, lists a purchee fee, the out-door ticket at veterinary institutions, at Rs 30 for pet animals. Vetic, a private clinic chain, lists consultation starting at Rs 799 at its Vasant Kunj clinic in Delhi.
The ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute at Izatnagar in Uttar Pradesh publishes a full tariff for its referral polyclinic, and it is the most detailed public price list for veterinary work in the country.
| Service | Chandigarh government institutions | ICAR-IVRI Izatnagar, pet rate | Private chain, starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Out-patient registration or ticket | Rs 30 | Rs 50 in normal hours | Rs 799 in Delhi, Rs 849 in Mumbai |
| Same, after 5 pm or on a holiday | Not listed | Rs 300 | Not listed |
| Anti-rabies vaccination | Rs 30 | Not listed | Vaccination from Rs 750 |
| Blood or urine test | Rs 20 | Complete blood count Rs 250 | Blood tests from Rs 200 |
| Stool test | Rs 10 | Faecal examination Rs 50 | Not listed |
| Plain radiography | Rs 30, radiology wing not functioning | Rs 150 | Not listed |
| Abdominal ultrasonography | Not listed | Rs 250 | Not listed |
| Ovariohysterectomy | Not listed | Rs 400 | Not listed |
| Major operation | Rs 100 | Varies by procedure | Not listed |
IVRI's tariff took effect in July 2022 and every figure carries plus tax as applicable. Its out-of-hours escalation is worth knowing before you need it. Registration for a dog or cat is Rs 50 in normal hours, Rs 150 after 12:30 pm and Rs 300 after 5 pm or on a holiday, a six-fold jump for walking in at the wrong time.
Two governments, two prices for the same vaccination
Government vaccination cost is not one number, and we are publishing both rather than averaging them. Chandigarh's tariff lists an anti-rabies vaccination fee of Rs 30. The Goa government told its Legislative Assembly on 7 August 2024 that its veterinary hospitals and dispensaries charge Rs 100 per dog for anti-rabies vaccines inclusive of the cost of the vaccine and the certificate, Rs 600 per dog for the nine-in-one canine vaccine on the same inclusive basis, and a service charge of Rs 150 per vaccine where the owner brings the vaccine themselves.
Those are both correct and both official. A three-fold difference between two Indian administrations for the same injection is the honest answer to what a government anti-rabies shot costs, and no national figure exists.
Which vaccines your dog needs and when is not this page's subject. Our dog vaccination schedule for India carries the schedule and the pricing in full, including at government hospitals.
These rates are subsidised and they assume a queue, limited hours and whatever equipment happens to be working. Chandigarh's own tariff lists an X-ray fee of Rs 30 and then notes in the same cell that the radiology wing is not functioning. Treat a government clinic as genuinely affordable primary care and an emergency as a question of which clinic is open, not which is cheapest.
Two monthly budgets, every input labelled
Two budgets at opposite ends of the same question come to Rs 1,531 and Rs 14,059 a month. Both are built only from the dated prices above, and every working is shown so you can change any line.
The first is a mid-sized indie, adopted, in Delhi, with an owner who walks and grooms the dog themselves and uses government veterinary services for routine care.
| Line | Working | Rupees a month |
|---|---|---|
| Food | 190 g a day from Pedigree's chart, 5.70 kg a month, at Rs 142 a kilo | 812 |
| Tick and flea prevention | One 10 to 20 kg chew at Rs 1,791, covering 12 weeks | 597 |
| Municipal licence | Rs 500 a year with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi | 42 |
| Vaccination | Goa government rates, Rs 600 nine-in-one plus Rs 100 anti-rabies, once a year | 58 |
| Veterinary visits | Two government out-patient tickets a year at Chandigarh's Rs 30 | 5 |
| Insurance | From Rs 200 a year | 17 |
| Total | 1,531 |
The second is a large pedigree dog in Mumbai on premium food, using a private clinic, a fortnightly groom and a weekday dog walker.
| Line | Working | Rupees a month |
|---|---|---|
| Food | Royal Canin's own chart, 355 g a day, 10.65 kg a month, at Rs 695 a kilo | 7,397 |
| Dog walker | 26 weekday walks of 20 minutes on a monthly plan at Rs 3,466 | 3,466 |
| Grooming charges | Two sessions at the chain's published Rs 1,099 starting price | 2,198 |
| Tick and flea prevention | One 20 to 40 kg chew at Rs 1,805, covering 12 weeks | 602 |
| Veterinary visits | Three consultations a year at Rs 849 | 212 |
| Vaccination | Two doses a year at the chain's Rs 750 starting price | 125 |
| Municipal licence | Rs 500 a year, Delhi's published fee standing in | 42 |
| Insurance | From Rs 200 a year | 17 |
| Total | 14,059 |
Nine times. That is the honest spread between two ordinary Indian households keeping an ordinary dog, and both ends of it are outside the Rs 3,000 to Rs 11,000 that the top-ranking page gives.
Six things these two budgets deliberately leave out, and you should add them back.
- Treats, chews and anything that is not the complete diet, which the Pedigree chart says should stay under 10 percent of daily calories.
- Consumables that run out on their own schedule, including shampoo, poop bags, a replacement bed and a chewed lead.
- Transport to the clinic, which in Mumbai or Bengaluru traffic is a real and repeated cost.
- Training, which is a one-off course for most dogs and a monthly line for some.
- Boarding charges every time you travel, which belong in the third bucket rather than the monthly one.
- Anything at all going wrong, which is the subject of the last section.
The dog walker figure is a Bangalore price, because no comparable monthly plan price was published for Mumbai on 20 October 2026. The municipal licence figure is Delhi's, because Brihanmumbai's own fee was not read at source for this page. Both are flagged here rather than smoothed into a total, and both are the first lines you should replace with your own city's number.
What actually changes between Indian cities, and what does not
Less changes between Indian cities than the ranking pages claim. One national veterinary chain published an identical starting price in Delhi, Bengaluru and Hyderabad on 20 October 2026, and charged Rs 50 more in Mumbai.
This is a like-for-like test rather than a survey. The same chain, the same four services, four clinic pages read within minutes of each other.
| Clinic | Vet consultation | Grooming from | Blood tests from | Vaccination from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vasant Kunj, Delhi | Rs 799 | Rs 1,099 | Rs 200 | Rs 750 |
| Kalyan Nagar, Bengaluru | Rs 799 | Rs 1,099 | Rs 200 | Rs 750 |
| Kukatpally, Hyderabad | Rs 799 | Rs 1,099 | Rs 200 | Rs 750 |
| Powai, Mumbai | Rs 849 | Rs 299 | Rs 200 | Rs 750 |
Supertails states that city-wise prices vary by 15 to 30 percent in the most expensive markets. Against this like-for-like check, the consultation varied by 6 percent across Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Mumbai, and the blood test and vaccination starting prices did not vary at all Vetic Pet Clinic, Kalyan Nagar, Bengaluru Vetic Pet Clinic, Kukatpally, Hyderabad Vetic Pet Clinic, Powai, Mumbai. One chain is not the whole market, and a chain that prices nationally is exactly the kind of business that is growing fastest in Indian pet care.
The grooming column is the warning label on that table. The same chain's Mumbai clinic page showed grooming from Rs 299 and its Delhi page from Rs 1,099, and its Bengaluru dog-grooming landing page quoted Rs 1,359 for a complete spa bath and Rs 199 for ear cleaning Vetic, Dog Grooming Bath and Spa…. A starting price is the floor for the cheapest single item on the menu, not the price of a groom. Ask what the full service costs for your dog's coat.
Where the city really does change the number
Local labour is where your city bites, not national retail. Boarding and walking are bought from people who live near you and pay your city's rent.
A Bengaluru home boarding provider published Rs 550 a night for a dog under 5 kg, Rs 650 for a medium breed such as a beagle or bulldog, and Rs 750 for a large breed such as a Labrador, German Shepherd or Golden Retriever, each for 24 hours. A Bangalore walking service published a monthly plan of 26 twenty-minute walks at Rs 3,466, a 40-minute version at Rs 4,679, and a single 40-minute walk at Rs 199. Its quarterly plan brought the twenty-minute walk down to Rs 129 from Rs 150 on the weekly plan.
Food goes the other way entirely. Both retailers used on this page ship nationally at one price, so a bag of kibble costs a buyer in Pune what it costs a buyer in Kolkata.
Across these published figures the city moved a consultation by Rs 50. The choice between a government veterinary institution at Rs 30 and a private chain at Rs 849 moved it by Rs 819 Vetic Pet Clinic, Powai, Mumbai. If you are trying to cut this budget, the question is not whether Mumbai is dearer than Hyderabad. It is which door you walk through for routine work.
Why the first year costs far more than the years after it
The first year carries the whole one-off list on top of the monthly bill. Registration, the puppy vaccination course, sterilisation and the gear are first year expenses, and the second year carries only the monthly bill and a booster.
Five one-off lines account for nearly all of the difference, and only some of them have a public price.
- Municipal registration, Rs 500 in Delhi, and payable again every year thereafter.
- The puppy vaccination course. Goa's government rate is Rs 600 a dose for the nine-in-one and Rs 100 for anti-rabies; a private chain starts at Rs 750 a visit. How many doses a puppy needs is set out on our dog vaccination schedule page.
- Sterilisation. ICAR-IVRI's published tariff is Rs 400 for an ovariohysterectomy and Rs 300 for a castration, plus tax. Private clinics charge multiples of that, and our guide to dog sterilisation in India covers the decision and the cost in full.
- Puppy food, which costs about the same per kilo as adult food. Drools' puppy 20 kg pack was Rs 3,462 against Rs 3,495 for the adult 20 kg on the same day Supertails, Drools Chicken and Egg Adult…. The first-year food bill rises because a growing puppy eats more per kilo of body weight and keeps getting heavier, not because the bag is dearer.
- Gear: a crate, bowls, a bed, a lead, a collar and a tag. These are not priced on this page. The Rs 3,000 to over Rs 50,000 one-off range quoted on the ranking pages carries no source on any of them.
The purchase price is the smallest number in the whole exercise
Run Budget A forward and the arithmetic settles the argument. At Rs 1,531 a month the running cost is Rs 18,372 a year, and over a 15-year life it is roughly Rs 2.76 lakh before a single illness. A Rs 5,000 purchase price is 27 percent of one year of that and under 2 percent of the whole.
Budget B comes to Rs 1.69 lakh a year and about Rs 25 lakh across a long life. Nobody chooses a dog by comparing those figures, and that is precisely why the figure worth knowing before you commit is the monthly one, not the purchase price.
How the breed changes the budget
Breed changes the budget in three ways: what the dog eventually weighs, how much coat it carries, and which diseases it is predisposed to. Only the first of the three is obvious, and the third is the one that hurts.
Weight is the whole food line. A Labrador Retriever settling at 30 kg eats 11.1 kg of dry food a month; a Shih Tzu at 6 kg eats about 3.3 kg. On the Rs 142 a kilo bag that is Rs 1,582 against Rs 470, and on a premium large-breed diet the Labrador alone crosses Rs 7,000.
Coat is the grooming charges line, and in Indian humidity it is not a cosmetic question. A double-coated or long-coated dog needs regular professional work that a short-coated dog does not, which is the difference between a salon visit every few weeks and a brush at home. Our guide to dog grooming at home in India covers what you can do yourself and where that stops.
Predisposed disease is the line nobody adds up in advance. It does not appear as a monthly figure. It appears once, as a bill, and the breeds it appears for are known in advance. Every one of Bonbeno's breed pages carries the inherited-disease risk for that breed, which is the right place to check before you commit rather than after.
An Indian pariah dog is usually a medium-sized dog with a short single coat, which cuts the food line and most of the grooming line at once, and it is a landrace rather than a closed-studbook breed, so it does not carry the concentrated inherited-disease risks that drive some pedigree vet bills. Adoption also removes the purchase price entirely. None of that makes an indie free, and the monthly bill in Budget A is a real indie's bill.
Adoption instead of buying is the single largest change you can make to the first-year number, and our guide to adopting a dog in India covers how it works.
The bill nobody budgets for
One veterinary bill in this section arrives for roughly half of Indian dogs and almost nobody budgets for it. A PCR survey of 525 dogs in Delhi, Mumbai, Sikkim and Ladakh found 261 of them, 49.7 percent, carrying at least one tick-borne pathogen.
That survey is the most useful denominator available on this question. Of 525 dogs sampled, 278, which is 53 percent, were visibly infested with ticks, and PCR found 49.7 percent with 95 percent confidence interval 45.4 to 54.1 infected with one or more canine tick-borne pathogen. Ehrlichia canis was found in 20.6 percent overall, rising to 39.5 percent of the 162 Delhi dogs and 27.2 percent of the 162 Mumbai dogs. Babesia vogeli was 5.5 percent overall, 8.6 percent in Delhi and 7.4 percent in Mumbai.
Infection is not the same as illness, and most of those dogs were not sick. The figure is still the right one to budget against, because it tells you how common the exposure is in the two biggest Indian metros.
What the work-up costs is at least partly knowable. At ICAR-IVRI's published pet rates, a complete blood count is Rs 250, a haemoprotozoa test Rs 100, an abdominal ultrasonography Rs 250 and fluid therapy Rs 150, all plus tax. A private clinic's blood tests start at Rs 200. No national figure exists for a full tick fever admission, and this page is not going to invent one. Our page on tick fever in dogs in India covers the illness itself.
Four more costs that sit in nobody's monthly figure
- A cruciate ligament rupture, which is common in larger dogs and is surgery. Our page on cruciate ligament rupture in dogs prices the Indian operation against published institutional tariffs, which is the only place we have seen it done in rupees.
- Boarding charges every time you travel, at Rs 550 to Rs 750 a night in Bengaluru by size. Ten nights a year for a large dog is Rs 7,500, which is nine months of Budget A's food.
- A behaviourist, which a dog with separation distress or reactivity needs and a dog without them never does. This is binary, not gradual.
- A rental deposit, a chewed sofa or a damaged door, which is a real cost of a bored adolescent dog and is one of the better arguments for paying a dog walker.
Insurance is the designed answer to this bucket, and it is cheap at the entry level. HDFC ERGO advertises pet cover at just Rs 200 a year, marked with an asterisk, and states a 30-day waiting period before cover begins. What that premium actually buys, what the exclusions are and whether it is worth it are covered in full on our pet insurance in India page.
Dividing an unknown bill by twelve produces a number that is wrong in both directions: too big in the years nothing happens and far too small in the year something does. Set money aside instead. Budget A's entire monthly bill is Rs 1,531, so a fund built at a few hundred rupees a month covers most of what a government clinic charges for a diagnostic work-up long before you need it. Seek veterinary advice for any sick dog rather than waiting for the fund to fill.
Older dogs change this bucket more than any other factor. Our guide to senior dog care in India covers what tends to arrive and when.
Can you get a dog for 5,000 rupees in India?
Yes, and it is close to the least useful question you can ask. Adoption removes the purchase price entirely, and the purchase price is the smallest number anywhere on this page.
Set it against the running cost. Budget A, the cheapest honest monthly figure on this page, is Rs 1,531 a month or Rs 18,372 a year. A Rs 5,000 purchase price is 27 percent of the first year's running cost and about 2 percent of what the dog costs across a 15-year life. On Budget B it is under 3 percent of a single year.
Google's own related questions on this search tell you how badly the demand is pointed. On 20 October 2026, the People Also Ask box for this query and its neighbours returned, verbatim, Which dog under 3000, Which dog is best under 20,000, Which dog price 2000, Can I get a golden retriever under 5000, and What is the no. 1 costly dog. Not one of them asks what the dog costs to keep. Every one of them asks what it costs to acquire.
That gap is also where the welfare problem lives. A purebred puppy of a popular breed advertised at Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 is cheap because something has been left out, and what has been left out is normally the mother's care, the vaccination course or the health screening. The bill arrives later, as a vet bill, and it is larger than the saving. Our guide to checking a dog breeder in India sets out what to ask and what to walk away from.
The purchase price is a rounding error against 15 years of food, prevention and veterinary care. Paying less for the animal and more for the consequences is the worst available trade, and adoption instead of buying removes the purchase price without making that trade at all.
If Rs 5,000 is genuinely your limit, the honest advice is not about which breed fits inside it. It is to check whether Rs 1,531 a month for the next fifteen years fits inside it, because that is the number that decides whether the dog has a good life. Work it out from your own dog's weight and your own bag of food using the grid above, and you will know before you commit rather than after.
Common questions
How much is 1 month for a dog?
One month for a dog in India ran from about Rs 1,531 to Rs 14,059 in two worked budgets built from prices read on 20 October 2026. The lower figure is a 12 kg adopted indie in Delhi on an economy kibble, walked and groomed at home, using government veterinary services. The higher figure is a 30 kg Labrador in Mumbai on premium food with a private clinic, a fortnightly groom and a weekday dog walker. Food is the largest line in both.
Can I get a dog for 5,000 rupees in India?
Yes, and the purchase price is the smallest number involved. Adoption from a shelter removes it entirely. Against a running cost of Rs 1,531 a month for a mid-sized indie, a Rs 5,000 purchase is 27 percent of the first year and about 2 percent of a 15-year life. A purebred puppy advertised at Rs 3,000 to Rs 5,000 is cheap because something was left out, usually vaccination or health screening, and that reappears later as a veterinary bill.
How much do pet dogs cost in India?
Pet dogs in India cost a monthly recurring amount, a one-off amount in the first year, and an unpredictable veterinary amount, and those three should never be added into one figure. The recurring part is dominated by food, which on prices read on 20 October 2026 ran Rs 427 a month for a 5 kg dog on the cheapest complete kibble to Rs 7,710 for a 30 kg dog on a premium large-breed diet.
How much does it cost to feed a Labrador in India per month?
A 30 kg Labrador eats 370 g of dry food a day on Pedigree's published chart and 355 g on Royal Canin's, which is 10.65 to 11.1 kg a month. At prices read on 20 October 2026 that is Rs 1,582 a month on a Rs 142 a kilo bundle, Rs 1,842 on a 20 kg Pedigree bag, and Rs 7,397 to Rs 7,710 on Royal Canin Maxi Adult. The dog is the same in every case.
Which dog under 3000?
No dog costs Rs 3,000 to keep, whatever it cost to acquire. The cheapest full monthly budget on this page, for an adopted 12 kg indie in Delhi using government veterinary services and an economy kibble, comes to Rs 1,531 a month, and that excludes treats, transport, training and any illness. A purchase price under Rs 3,000 for a purebred puppy is a warning sign rather than a bargain.
Which dog is best under 20,000?
Bonbeno does not rank dogs by purchase price, because the purchase price decides almost nothing about what a dog costs. Rs 20,000 is roughly thirteen months of the cheapest honest monthly budget on this page and about six weeks of the most expensive. Choose on adult weight, coat type and inherited-disease risk, because those three set the budget for the next fifteen years.
What is the no. 1 costly dog?
The costliest dog is the heaviest one you feed on the dearest food, not the one with the highest price tag. A 40 kg dog on a premium large-breed diet costs Rs 9,585 a month to feed on prices read on 20 October 2026, against Rs 427 for a 5 kg dog on an economy kibble. That is a 22-fold difference in one line, created entirely by weight and brand.
Can I get a golden retriever under 5000?
Treat any Golden Retriever advertised under Rs 5,000 as a reason to stop rather than a bargain. The relevant number is what the dog costs afterwards. A Golden Retriever reaching 30 kg eats 11.1 kg of food a month, which is Rs 1,582 on an economy kibble and Rs 7,710 on a premium large-breed diet, before vaccination, prevention, grooming or a single veterinary problem.
Is a government veterinary hospital cheaper for a dog in India?
Yes, by a wide margin on routine work. Chandigarh's government veterinary institutions charge Rs 30 for a pet out-patient ticket and Rs 30 for anti-rabies vaccination, against Rs 799 for a consultation at a private chain in Delhi. Goa's government hospitals charge Rs 100 for anti-rabies and Rs 600 for the nine-in-one. Those are subsidised counter fees that assume a queue and limited hours, so check what is open before an emergency rather than during one.
