Adult dog care in India: the annual routine from one year to senior

The adult years, from the end of growth to the AAHA senior threshold, laid out as a yearly calendar and a seasonal one, with every interval taken from the guideline that sets it, every Indian fee from the department or seller that prints it, and the depth handed off to the vaccination, deworming, tick, heat, licence and insurance guides.

Quick answer

Adult dog care tips for India are one yearly calendar and one seasonal calendar. Yearly: a vet exam every 6 to 12 months with body condition and teeth checked, a faecal test every 3 months, Leptospira and rabies every year, core vaccines at most every 3 years, monthly deworming, a tick product all year, and the licence renewed on the rabies date. Seasonal: pre-dawn summer walks, dried ears and paws in the monsoon, a warm winter bed, a quiet room on Diwali. Your nearby vet sets the intervals.

What adult dog care in India covers: the years from one to senior

Adult dog care in India covers the stretch from the end of growth to the start of the last quarter of the dog's expected life, and the 2019 AAHA Canine Life Stage Guidelines split it in two: young adult, from the end of rapid growth to physical and social maturity at about 3 to 4 years, and mature adult, from then until the last 25 percent of estimated lifespan, when the dog becomes a senior. The guideline does not print an age for the senior line because it depends on breed and size; The Kennel Club's own breed pages put a Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd Dog, Golden Retriever and Pug at a lifespan of over 10 years and a Beagle at over 12 The Kennel Club (UK), Breeds A to Z The Kennel Club (UK), Breeds A to Z The Kennel Club (UK), Breeds A to Z The Kennel Club (UK), Breeds A to Z, so a quarter of that puts the senior line at about 7.5 years for the first four and about 9 for the Beagle. The dog age in human years guide works that line out by size; this page is the calendar for the years before it.

The routine for those years is one annual list and one seasonal list, and both are handed to the reader as documents rather than habits. The annual list is the AAHA exam and its minimum database, the WSAVA 2024 revaccination rule, the TroCCAP deworming and faecal-test intervals and the municipal licence renewal World Small Animal Veterinary Association… Tropical Council for Companion Animal… Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The seasonal list is the pre-dawn summer walk, the monsoon ear and tick routine, the North Indian cold snap and the Diwali week. The table puts the yearly items side by side with the guideline that sets each one and the Indian price that a department or a seller prints for it; the sections below carry the reasoning, and the linked guides carry the depth.

Five documents do the work on that table, and the Government of Puducherry's own Pet Guide agrees with the first of them in one line, 'when your puppy reaches adulthood, at least one visit a year is required';. The five are listed below.

  • AAHA 2019 sets the exam interval, the exam contents and the yearly blood, urine and faecal database for a mature adult.
  • WSAVA 2024 sets the booster rule, three years or longer for the core viral vaccines and one year for Leptospira, with rabies on the local law.
  • TroCCAP 2019 and 2022 set the tropical deworming, faecal-test and tick intervals that Indian clinics thin without saying so.
  • The Kennel Club breed pages set the exercise hours by breed, which is what an Indian flat has to find room for.
  • The municipal portal sets the one date the law enforces, the day you register or renew the dog's licence, and ties it to the rabies certificate.

The yearly vet visit: what AAHA 2019 says it should include

The yearly vet visit for an adult dog, in the 2019 AAHA guideline, is a consultation and physical exam every 6 to 12 months with the five vital assessments, temperature, pulse, respiration, pain and nutrition, where nutrition means body weight plus a body condition score and a muscle condition score, followed by a dental assessment, a behaviour review and, for a mature adult, an annual minimum database of CBC, chemistry screen and urinalysis. The guideline adds a faecal examination 1 to 4 times a year by lifestyle and preventive use, an annual tick-borne disease test, and the reminder that a working dog is seen every six months. WSAVA 2024 makes the same point from the vaccine side: the annual health check 'is much more than just a vaccination consultation';.

The booster question, with the disagreement printed

The booster question has two answers in India and they disagree, so both are printed here with their dates. WSAVA 2024 says the core modified-live vaccines against distemper, adenovirus and parvovirus are given 'no more frequently than every 3 years' after the dose at or after 26 weeks, that Leptospira vaccines need 'annual revaccination', that Leptospira should be treated as core where the disease is endemic, and that rabies revaccination follows 'local regulations or product leaflet';. The Chandigarh Animal Husbandry Department's printed schedule says 'booster vaccination, annually' for the DHLPP combination and for rabies, the Puducherry department's Pet Guide says 'revaccination every year' for its combination vaccine, and the Vetic chain's national page sells an annual booster package of DHPPiL, canine corona, kennel cough and anti-rabies 'starts at Rs 3,199' on the line that 'most vaccines are effective for 1 year'; Department of Animal Husbandry and Animal… Vetic Pet Clinic, Dog Vaccination Near Me. The guideline is the evidence; the department schedule is what the government hospital will do; the clinic package is a price. What governs today, whatever vial the clinic uses to vaccinate, is the annual rabies dose, because the Delhi licence is valid for a maximum of one year 'subjected to date of vaccination' and the annual Leptospira dose, because the guideline itself asks for it World Small Animal Veterinary Association…. Whether the DHP component goes in every year or every three is a decision for your nearby vet, who knows the vial in the fridge and the dog on the table; the dog vaccination schedule in India guide lays out the 7-in-1 and 9-in-1 vials antigen by antigen so that conversation starts from the label.

The licence clock is the rabies date, not the birthday. Delhi's portal makes the registration certificate valid for a maximum of one year from the anti-rabies vaccination date and charges Rs 100 a month once a one-month grace period after that certificate expires has passed. Book the rabies dose and the renewal in the same week every year and the two clocks never drift apart.

What the minimum database costs at a government hospital

The minimum database costs under Rs 700 at a government veterinary hospital when it is bought test by test. The Bihar Animal Sciences University's Veterinary Clinical Complex prints Rs 200 for canine outdoor registration valid for 10 days, Rs 300 for a CBC, Rs 100 for routine urine, Rs 100 for a faecal examination and Rs 100 for a blood parasite examination, with a 'master health checkup' of CBC, blood sugar, liver and kidney panels and lipids at Rs 2,000 and a physical-exam-only health certificate at Rs 500. TroCCAP wants the faecal test at least once every 3 months to check that the deworming regime is working and that the owner is giving it; the dog deworming schedule for India guide carries the tablet doses per kilogram. Whatever the rate card says, the vet who examines the dog decides which tests this dog needs this year.

How much exercise an adult dog needs in an Indian flat, by breed group

An adult dog in an Indian flat needs the hours its breed group was built for, and the breed body's own pages put a number on them: The Kennel Club lists the Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd Dog and Golden Retriever at 'more than 2 hours per day' with a 'large house' as the size of home, and the Beagle and Pug at 'up to 1 hour per day', the Pug being the one of the five whose listed home is a flat or apartment The Kennel Club (UK), Breeds A to Z The Kennel Club (UK), Breeds A to Z The Kennel Club (UK), Breeds A to Z. AAHA asks the vet to 'discuss and emphasize daily exercise needs appropriate to age, breed and temperament' at every adult visit and notes that daily exercise and mental stimulation reduce the boredom that drives destructive behaviour.

Indian Pariah DogNo Kennel Club listingAnyA native heat-adapted dog that still needs a daily walk and something to think about

The Indian constraint is heat, not floor space. In the UK VetCompass series of 1,259 heat-related illness events, 652 of the 879 events with a known trigger were exertional, and 372 of the 551 exercise events whose type was recorded followed an ordinary walk, not a run. So the two Labrador hours in a Chennai May are walked before sunrise and after dark, with the heat safety for dogs in India guide's city walk windows on the fridge. The other constraint is the working day. The RSPCA advises that a dog is left alone 'for no longer than four hours' and cites research that eight out of ten dogs find it hard to cope when left, half of them without obvious signs; a dog walker at midday is part of the exercise budget for a household where everyone is out nine hours.

The law has one line on this. Section 11(1)(g) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960 makes it an offence for an owner who 'neglects to exercise or cause to be exercised reasonably any dog habitually chained up or kept in close confinement', and section 3 places on every person in charge of an animal the duty 'to take all reasonable measures to ensure the well-being of such animal';. A dog on a balcony chain all day is the case that section describes. The things to do with your dog in India guide fills the hours with places and games.

Weight: the WSAVA body condition score and the obesity figures

Weight in an adult dog is judged on the WSAVA nine-point body condition score, not on the bathroom scale alone: the ideal band is 4 to 5, where 'ribs palpable without excess fat covering, waist observed behind ribs when viewed from above, abdomen tucked up when viewed from side', a 6 has 'ribs palpable with slight excess fat covering' and a waist that is 'discernible but not prominent', and an 8 has ribs 'not palpable under very heavy fat cover' with the waist absent. AAHA asks for that score and a muscle condition score at every visit and notes that 56 percent of dogs in the United States are overweight or obese, citing the 2017 pet obesity survey, and that Labrador Retrievers kept at ideal weight through life lived on average 15 percent longer.

The figure with a denominator comes from the UK primary-care records. Pegram and colleagues found 1,580 of 22,333 dogs, 7.1 percent, recorded as overweight during 2016, with the Pug at 3.12 times the odds of a crossbred, the Beagle at 2.67 and the Golden Retriever at 2.58, and neutered, middle-aged and insured dogs more likely to be recorded; the authors read the gap between 7.1 percent recorded and the survey figures above 50 percent as under-reporting by clinics, not as thin dogs. No Indian prevalence study with a denominator turned up in a Europe PMC search on 18 September 2026 (the query returned zero records while a Labrador hip dysplasia control returned 36), so the honest Indian statement is the chart, not a percentage.

How to weigh and score a dog at home every month

To weigh and score an adult dog at home every month, do the four things below on the same day each month and write the numbers on the vaccination card.

  1. Weigh yourself, then yourself holding the dog, on the bathroom scale, and subtract; a large dog goes on the clinic's platform scale at the next visit.
  2. Run flat fingers along the ribs: felt easily under a thin cover is a 4 or 5, felt with slight excess cover is a 6, felt with difficulty under heavy cover is a 7.
  3. Look down from above for a waist behind the ribs, and from the side for a tuck behind the chest; a missing waist is a 7 or above.
  4. Compare the day's meal weight with the maker's chart: Pedigree India's own table gives a 20 kg dog 898 kcal and 275 g of its dry food a day, cut by 10 percent when the dog gets under an hour of exercise, and treats capped at 10 percent of calories.

A lean dog scores 4 or 5 all year; a score that has climbed a point since the last visit is the reason to bring the bag and the treat tin to the vet, who sets the target weight for this dog; the dog diet chart for India guide carries the grams by weight and the Indian prices per kilogram.

Dental care: the periodontal disease figure and the weekly routine

Dental care in an adult dog is a daily brush at home and an oral assessment at every vet visit, because periodontal disease is one of the commonest diagnoses a general practice makes: in the UK VetCompass sample, 2,797 of 22,333 dogs, 12.52 percent, were diagnosed with it in a single year, the median age of an affected dog was 7.54 years against 3.90 for the rest, and 18 breeds carried higher odds than crossbreds, the Toy Poodle at 3.97 and the King Charles Spaniel at 2.63. The Government of Puducherry's Pet Guide says the same thing without the denominator, 'the number one health problem for dogs is periodontal disease', and tells owners to start brushing in puppyhood.

AAHA's adult checklist asks the vet to 'evaluate the existence and adequacy of home care / daily dental hygiene', to evaluate the progression of any periodontal disease, to perform a conscious oral exam and an anaesthetised one when indicated, and to discuss which chew toys are safe. The realistic home routine is listed below.

  • Brush with a dog toothpaste and a finger brush or a soft child's brush, daily if the dog allows it and never fewer than three times a week, starting at the canines and working back.
  • Look at the gum line once a week for a red rim, brown crust at the base of the upper back teeth, or a smell that has changed.
  • Choose chews that dent under a thumbnail; bones, antlers and hard nylon break teeth, and AAHA asks the vet to talk through 'acceptable chew toys' for this reason.
  • Ask for the mouth to be scored at the annual visit and accept a scaling under anaesthesia when the vet finds disease; the Bihar Animal Sciences University hospital prints Rs 1,500 for canine scaling and Rs 1,500 for an extraction.

Small and flat-faced dogs with crowded teeth reach that scaling earlier than a Labrador does, which is why AAHA suggests a first cleaning, oral exam and charting 'especially in smaller breeds with crowded dentition';. The dog grooming at home in India guide shows the brushing hold; the vet decides when a scaling is due.

Summer and winter: the IMD thresholds and what they change in the routine

Summer and winter change the routine at two thresholds the India Meteorological Department publishes: a heat wave on the plains begins when a station's maximum reaches 40 C with a departure of 4.5 C or more from normal, or 45 C outright, and a cold wave begins when the minimum drops to 10 C or below with a departure of 4.5 C or more, or to 4 C outright India Meteorological Department. The first threshold moves the walk; the second moves the bed.

Summer: the walk moves to the pre-dawn hour

Summer means the walk moves to the pre-dawn hour and an IMD orange or red alert means no walk at all, because exercise, not the parked car, is what puts dogs in the clinic: 652 of the 879 heat-illness events with a known trigger in the UK VetCompass series were exertional and 372 of the 551 typed exercise events followed a walk. The Animal Welfare Board of India's advisory of 4 May 2026 puts the duty in the owner's lap, quoting section 3 of the 1960 Act and section 11(1), and asks for shade through the day, water bowls kept full and protection from 'burns from hot surfaces'. The heat safety for dogs in India guide carries the 04:30 to 05:30 IST walk windows for nine cities, Delhi, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Pune and Bengaluru, the signs of heat illness and the cool-first, transport-second rule; this page only adds that a humid June in Mumbai is worse for a Pug than a dry May in Jaipur, because panting cools nothing when the air is already wet.

Winter: the North Indian cold snap and the short-coated dog

Winter matters for a short-coated dog on the North Indian plains, where the IMD puts December and January as the coldest months with normal minimums under 8 C 'over many parts', and where its colour-coded cold-wave alerts run from yellow for two days of cold wave in isolated areas to red for severe cold wave persisting beyond two days. The AVMA's cold-weather page gives the rule for which dog feels it: 'pets' cold tolerance can vary from pet to pet based on their coat, body fat stores, activity level, and health', short-haired dogs 'feel the cold faster because they have less protection', short-legged dogs chill through the belly, and dogs with diabetes, heart or kidney disease or Cushing's regulate temperature badly, as do the very young and very old. Its hypothermia signs are the ones to act on: whining, shivering, anxiety, slowing or stopping, weakness, and looking for somewhere to burrow.

The Board's own winter document is an appeal dated 26 December 2023, F. No. 3-1/2023-24/PCA, which says the season 'particularly in the northern parts of our country, is marked by a severe cold wave' and asks citizens to provide 'bedding and mattresses' to stray animals 'to meet their thermal requirements';; the IMD's own do's and don'ts for animals add covering the animal's shelter from all sides at night, dry straw bedding, and 'do not leave animals tied or roaming in open areas during a cold wave';. For a pet Labrador, Beagle or Indian Pariah Dog in Delhi that is a bed off the marble floor, a coat for the 6 am walk when the dog is short-coated, thin, old or ill, and the walk itself shortened on an orange day. A dog that is fed more 'for the cold' gains weight and no warmth; the AVMA says to hold the body condition where it was in October.

Monsoon: ticks, ears, skin and paws from June to September

The monsoon is the season the Indian adult-dog routine is built around, because the brown dog tick, the ear canal and the skin all do worse in wet heat: in the one four-city field survey, done in June to September 2008, 80 percent of 162 dogs examined in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and 75.3 percent of 162 in Delhi carried ticks, against 17 percent of 101 in Sikkim and 11 percent of 100 in Ladakh, and 261 of all 525 dogs, 49.7 percent, were PCR-positive for at least one tick-borne pathogen. Those were stray and shelter dogs in an Animal Birth Control programme, 77 percent of them strays, so the percentages describe dogs that live outdoors in the rain, not a pet on a sofa; the direction is what matters for the pet.

Ticks: the routine does not change with the season, the checks do

The tick routine does not change with the season because TroCCAP's guideline for the tropics says dogs 'should be protected from ectoparasite infestations throughout the year', that the brown dog tick 'can complete more than one generation per year in the tropics', and that dogs living mostly indoors are still exposed 'when visiting parks or pet stores for grooming';. What changes in the monsoon is the hand check for ticks and fleas, which goes from most days to every day at the ears, armpits, groin and between the toes, and the bedding wash, which goes to weekly. The dog ticks in India guide carries the product classes, the label intervals, removal with tweezers, and why Dettol and vinegar do nothing; the Kerala study it cites found Babesia peaking in the pre-monsoon months, so the product is on the dog before the first rain, not after the first tick.

Ears: an otitis figure with a denominator, and its August peak

The ear figure with a denominator is Indian and it peaks in August. In Jammu, 273 dogs with skin disease were seen at the university teaching hospital, the Central Veterinary Hospital at Talab Tillo and private clinics between August and December 2011; 60 of them, 21.97 percent, had otitis externa, and of those 60 cases 28.33 percent presented in August, 26.66 percent in October and 10 percent in December, with dogs of 3 years and above making up 55 percent, males 37 of the 60, and the German Shepherd 18 of the 60 and the Labrador 11. The study's own caveats travel with it: the denominator is dogs with skin disease rather than all dogs, the window opened in the monsoon so it cannot show a pre-monsoon baseline, and the authors put the August load down to 'relative humidity' and to owners not drying the canal after a bath. The UK primary-care figure sets the scale for a whole population: 1,631 of 22,333 dogs, 7.30 percent, were diagnosed with otitis externa in one year, with pendulous ears at 1.76 times the odds of erect ears, the Beagle at 14.72 percent and the Golden Retriever at 14.11 percent. So in the monsoon a drop-eared dog's ears are dried with a towel after every wet walk and every bath, lifted and smelt once a week, and shown to the vet at the first head-shake; nothing goes into the canal that the vet has not prescribed.

A head-shake in the monsoon is a vet visit, not a cotton bud. The Jammu study put the August load down to humidity and to canals left wet after a bath, and the UK series put a drop-eared dog at 1.76 times an erect-eared dog's odds; dry the outside of the ear after every wet walk, and let the vet look down the canal before anything goes into it O'Neill DG, Volk AV, Soares T, Church DB.

Skin, paws and the one vaccine the rain makes core

The rest of the monsoon routine is four habits, listed below, and one vaccine.

  • Dry the coat to the skin after rain, with a towel and then a fan, because a wet double coat on a Golden Retriever stays wet for hours under the guard hairs.
  • Wash and dry the feet after every walk, and look between the toes daily for ticks, cuts and the red, licked skin that starts a paw infection.
  • Hot-wash bedding weekly and keep the dog off damp mats; the brown dog tick lays its eggs in the cracks of the room, not on the dog.
  • Keep the deworming to TroCCAP's monthly interval through the rains and run the faecal test in the quarter the monsoon falls in, because standing water and mud are where the eggs are.

The vaccine is Leptospira. WSAVA 2024 says that 'in countries or regions where canine leptospirosis is endemic' the vaccine should be viewed as core and revaccinated annually, and India is such a region, which is why the annual booster that every Indian department prints is defensible for its L component even where the DHP component is not. The date for it is before the rains, and the vet who knows the local serogroups picks the vial.

Diwali: noise fear in dogs, and what the rules say about fireworks

Diwali is the week the largest behaviour survey of pet dogs predicts trouble for a third of them: in 13,715 Finnish pet dogs across 264 breeds, noise sensitivity was the commonest anxiety trait at 32 percent, fear of fireworks was its commonest form at 26 percent, and the prevalence rose with age. AAHA's adult checklist names 'noise phobias (such as storms or fireworks)' as a thing to raise at the visit, and warns that chronic stress affects the dog's health as well as the bond.

What the rules say, with the two documents named

Two documents govern fireworks noise in India and neither is an animal-welfare instrument. The Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Rules 2000, rule 5A(2), say that 'sound emitting fire crackers shall not be burst in silence zone or during night time', and rule 2(j) defines night time as 10.00 pm to 6.00 am; rule 7 lets any person complain to the authority when the night-time restriction is broken. The Supreme Court, in Arjun Gopal v. Union of India on 23 October 2018, narrowed that for the festival: direction (xiv) says that on Diwali and festivals like Gurpurab fireworks 'would strictly be from 8:00 p.m. till 10:00 p.m. only', permits only improved and green crackers, bans joined crackers (laris), and makes the timing direction 'applicable throughout India';. The Animal Welfare Board of India's circulars list, read on 18 September 2026, carries no fireworks advisory at all; its one Diwali entry is an advisory on the use of products made from Panchagavya, dated 6 November 2023. So the sentence to say to a neighbour is the court's, not the Board's, and the two hours it names are the two hours to plan for.

The Diwali week plan for a dog that fears noise

The plan for the two loud hours is the five steps below, agreed with the vet before the festival rather than on the night.

  1. Walk the dog before dusk on Diwali day and the day after, on a lead with the identification tag checked, and keep the licence certificate and a current photograph on the phone.
  2. Make the quietest room the dog's room from 7 pm, with the windows shut, a fan or the television on, the bed it already uses and a chew; do not carry a frightened dog outside to 'see it is nothing';.
  3. Feed the evening meal early, because a dog that has been panting and pacing for two hours will not eat and may vomit if it does.
  4. Ask the vet in the week before whether this dog is one that needs a prescribed medicine for the two hours; the survey found the fear rises with age, so a dog that coped at 2 may not at 7, and the vet decides, never a neighbour's tablet.
  5. Log the bursting past 10 pm with the time and the building, and complain under rule 7 the next morning; the rule exists to be used.

A dog that trembles through the festival is not being difficult; it is doing what 26 in 100 pet dogs do, and the two hours the court allows are survivable with a shut door and a plan Supreme Court of India.

What a year of adult dog care costs in India: the rupee table

A year of adult dog care in India costs about Rs 29,000 on the government-hospital and retail figures below and about Rs 43,000 on the private-chain figures, for a healthy 20 kg dog on a mid-price dry food, and both sums are arithmetic on rows from different cities rather than a quote from any one clinic. Every figure is the one the department or seller printed on 18 September 2026, each was divided by 84.38 and by 74 to check that it is not a converted dollar price, and none divided cleanly except NexGard Spectra's Rs 3,375 MRP, which is Rs 1,125 a tablet and has no US pack to convert from.

The two sums in the first sentence are built from that table. The lower one adds the Rs 200 registration, the Rs 700 Goa booster, the Rs 600 database, Rs 300 of faecal tests, Rs 1,171 of deworming, Rs 7,220 of tick chews, the Rs 500 Delhi licence and Rs 18,203 of food, which is Rs 28,894 Goa Legislative Assembly Supertails, Savavet Kiwof Plus Dog… Supertails, MSD Animal Health Bravecto 1000… Municipal Corporation of Delhi Supertails, Pedigree Chicken and Vegetables… Pedigree India (Mars). The higher one swaps in the Rs 3,199 package, the Rs 2,000 check-up, Rs 13,232 of monthly chews, four baths at Rs 3,736 and the Rs 200 premium, which is Rs 42,541 Supertails, Boehringer Ingelheim NexGard… Vetic Pet Clinic HDFC ERGO General Insurance. Food is 63 percent of the lower sum and 43 percent of the higher, and the food row is the one that scales with the dog: Pedigree's own chart gives a 10 kg dog 165 g a day and a 30 kg dog 370 g, so a Beagle eats for about Rs 30 a day and a large Labrador for about Rs 67 on the same bag Supertails, Pedigree Chicken and Vegetables…. Royal Canin's Medium Adult at Rs 761 a kilogram is 4.2 times the Pedigree price per kilogram, and its bag sizes and calculator set the grams, so it is shown as a price and not as a yearly sum.

Three things the table leaves out on purpose are illness, which is what the pet insurance in India guide prices policy by policy; sterilisation, which is a one-time cost the dog sterilisation in India guide puts at Rs 300 to 400 at a government polyclinic; and the licence itself, whose city-by-city fees sit in the dog licence and pet registration in India guide. The government rows are only reachable where a government hospital or corporation clinic exists; Chennai's six corporation pet clinics, in Tamil Nadu, give 'all the treatment and anti-rabies vaccination free of cost' and issued 9,115 licences in 2024, and Delhi's portal shows 19,024 pet dog certificates since 2021 with 71 of 1,085 applications this financial year rejected. Prices move; municipal fees and rate cards move slowly, retail rows move within weeks, so the date on each row is part of the figure.

Common questions about adult dog care in India

How to take care of a dog for beginners?

To take care of an adult dog for the first time, run one yearly list and one seasonal list. Yearly: a vet exam every 6 to 12 months with weight, body condition and a look in the mouth, blood and urine once a year, a faecal test every 3 months, the Leptospira and rabies doses every year and the core viral vaccines no more often than every 3 years, deworming monthly, a tick product all year, and the municipal licence renewed on the rabies date. Seasonal: pre-dawn walks in summer, dried ears and paws in the monsoon, a bed off the floor in a North Indian winter, and a shut quiet room from 8 pm to 10 pm on Diwali. Your nearby vet adjusts every interval to your dog.

How much does it cost to care for a dog in India?

A healthy 20 kg adult dog costs about Rs 29,000 a year on government-hospital and retail figures and about Rs 43,000 on private-chain figures, as printed on 18 September 2026: Rs 600 plus Rs 100 for the 9-in-1 and rabies at a Goa government hospital against a Rs 3,199 private booster package, Rs 600 of blood, urine and faecal tests at a university hospital, Rs 1,171 of deworming tablets, Rs 7,220 to Rs 13,232 of tick chews, Rs 50 to Rs 500 for the licence, and about Rs 18,200 of mid-price dry food, which is the largest row. Illness, sterilisation and insurance sit on top; the cost table above shows each source.

How long can a dog be left alone?

The RSPCA advises that a dog is left alone for no longer than four hours at a stretch, so that it can exercise, go to the toilet and spend time with people, and it cites research that eight out of ten dogs find being left hard, half of them without any obvious sign. For an Indian household out nine hours, that means a midday walker or a neighbour, and a dog taught from the first week that a short absence ends with the owner coming back.

What are the 7 basic needs of a dog?

No veterinary or welfare body publishes a list of seven basic needs for a dog; the number comes from blog headings. The needs the law in India actually names are in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960: section 3 makes it the duty of every person in charge of an animal to take all reasonable measures for its well-being, and section 11(1) makes it an offence to fail to provide sufficient food, drink or shelter, to keep a dog on an unreasonably short or heavy chain, or to neglect to exercise a dog that is habitually chained or confined. AAHA's adult checklist adds ten factors a vet reviews yearly, including nutrition, parasite control, vaccination, dental health, behaviour and exercise appropriate to breed and age.

How to spend time with a dog?

Spend the hours the breed was built for, split into the cool ends of the day: The Kennel Club puts a Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd Dog and Golden Retriever at more than 2 hours of exercise a day and a Beagle or Pug at up to 1 hour, and AAHA asks for daily mental stimulation as well as exercise to head off the boredom behind chewing and barking. In an Indian flat that is two walks, one before sunrise in summer, a game of find-the-food indoors, a new cue taught in five-minute sessions, and the daily hand check for ticks that doubles as ten minutes of handling the dog enjoys.
