Dog food brand

Royal Canin dog food in India

Royal Canin is the most expensive dog food most Indian buyers will consider, and the one question nobody answers is where the bag comes from. The statutory block answers it. This page records the origin, the importer, what it costs per kilogram across six sellers, and what each recall register returned.

Quick answer

Royal Canin dog food sold in India is imported, not made here. Six of seven Amazon.in listings declare France as the country of origin, and four name a South African plant alongside it, so a buyer cannot tell which made their bag. Royal Canin India Pvt Ltd of Mumbai is named as importer, and the brand is owned by Mars, Incorporated. Prices run from Rs 609.20 to Rs 1,196.00 per kilogram, roughly four times Pedigree and five times Drools at comparable volume.

Where it is made

Origin is recorded per product, not per brand, because it varies per product. The evidence column says how strong each row is: a pack in hand outranks a filing, and a marketplace listing is the weakest thing here that is still evidence.

Royal Canin Mini Adult Dog Dry Food, 800 g (ASIN B005ZS7RHG)FranceRetailer listing (weak)Declares country-of-origin France in the plain English render. Its manufacturer and packer fields BOTH name two plants, 'Royal Canin SAS, 650, Avenue, De La Petile, Aimargues, Camargues-BP4-30470, France & Royal Canin South Africa, Epson Avenue, North Riding, Randb Gautenq, South Africa', so the origin attribute and the manufacturer field do not agree on how many countries are involved. Importer named as Royal Canin India Pvt Ltd, Goregaon East, Mumbai, PIN 400063. 4.4 stars from 8,691 ratings, 900+ bought in the past month, so a volume line.
Royal Canin Mini Puppy Dry Food, 800 g (ASIN B005ZS7OUG)FranceRetailer listing (weak)Same declaration and the same two-plant manufacturer field as the Mini Adult. Importer PIN 400063. 4.4 stars from 9,349 ratings, 1K+ bought in the past month.
Royal Canin Maxi Puppy Dry Food, 4 kg (ASIN B002G0MSZ2)FranceRetailer listing (weak)Declares France. Its Manufacturer field names the French plant ONLY while its Packer field names France and South Africa, so two statutory fields on one listing disagree about which countries are involved. Importer PIN 400063.
Royal Canin Maxi Adult 5+ Dry Food, 4 kg (ASIN B0015SDBUM)FranceRetailer listing (weak)Declares France, two-plant manufacturer field, importer PIN 400063. Also carries 'Container Type: Tin' for a bag of dry kibble and the bare phrase 'Veterinarian-Recommended' inside its Recommended Uses attribute.
Royal Canin Medium Adult Dog Dry Food, 1 kg (ASIN B000WIN2NM)FranceRetailer listing (weak)Declares France and names the French plant only. This is one of the two listings carrying a different importer PIN: 400092 on both the importer and the packer field, where four other listings give 400063.
Royal Canin Maxi Adult Dog Dry Food, 1 kg (ASIN B00LNB5NVG)FranceRetailer listing (weak)Declares France but names no plant address, giving the manufacturer as 'Royal Canin SAS,' and nothing more. Its packer field gives PIN 400075, a third variant. It also contradicts itself on pack weight, with a title of 1 kg, a Unit Count of 1000.0 Grams and an Item Weight of 800 Grams, and labels a Maxi food as 'Dog Breed Size: Small'. No price per kilogram is taken from this listing.
Royal Canin Medium Puppy Dry Food, 1 kg (ASIN B0019531W4)Not stated on the listing. No country-of-origin attribute at allRetailer listing (weak)The absence is the finding, and it sits beside six listings that do declare. This listing also carries no importer and no packer field, and was 'Currently unavailable' with no price on the day it was read. It is the candidate for a Hindi-locale re-run, which is the documented route to a Legal Metrology block that the English render omits.

What it costs in India

Each row is one seller's listed price for one pack size on one date, converted to a price per kilogram so the pack sizes compare. Indian marketplace pricing moves, so a single listing is not a price and none of these is quoted on its own.

Recall checks

Each register below was searched for this brand, and then searched again for something comparable to prove it answers at all. A register that returns nothing for both has cleared nothing. India maintains no pet food recall register, so no row here can stand in for one.

RegisterHits for this brandControlWhat a nil result is worth hereChecked
US FDA Animal & Veterinary recalls02 for search_api_fulltext=pedigree, the identical method on the same dayMeaningful but window-bounded to about three years2026-10-09
openFDA enforcement API03 for product_description:"dog food", "cat food", "freshpet" and "pedigree" on the same endpointNothing: the API does not index animal food2026-10-09
US FDA Animal & Veterinary recalls

This nil carries more weight than the equivalent nil on an India-only brand, and the reason must travel with it. Royal Canin product IS within this register's jurisdiction: Petfood Industry describes Royal Canin U.S. as a subsidiary of Mars and United States manufacturing is among the brand's plants, so a zero here is a real result rather than an artefact of the brand not being sold in the country. Two limits remain. FDA's own parent page states recalls stay on the site for three years before archiving, so this covers the current window only. And the Indian product is declared French and South African made rather than American, so even a US recall would not automatically have covered the bag on an Indian shelf, and this nil says nothing about French or South African production. The jurisdictionally correct register for a French-made food is the European Union rapid alert system, which has NOT been searched for this page. The instrument is demonstrably working: the identical scrape for pedigree returned 'Showing 1 to 2 of 2 entries' with a rendered table the same day.

openFDA enforcement API

All three brand and company forms return nothing, and the nil is worth nothing because the controls condemn the endpoint. A search of the whole API for dog food returns two records in total, both for one American company in 2019, and cat food returns nothing at all. A search for pedigree returns zero here while FDA's own Animal and Veterinary listing returns two dated Pedigree recalls on the same day, so this endpoint misses recalls its own regulator publishes elsewhere. It is recorded only so that the obvious API route is on the record as tried and unusable, which is why the Animal and Veterinary listing is the register this page relies on. Coverage limit established 13 October 2026, and it is the main thing to read here: this endpoint does not meaningfully index pet food recalls, so the nil above is a fact about the register's coverage of this product class rather than about the brand. Seven firms with documented pet food recalls return zero rows, among them Mars Petcare's Pedigree wet dog food recall of 2 July 2026, Fromm Family Foods' of 21 August 2026 and Revival Animal Health's of 26 August 2026, all three of which are listed in the US FDA Animal & Veterinary register, while human-food controls on the same endpoint on the same day return 42 rows for one firm and 1,354 for one product category. The "pet food" control row is itself a diced-carrot recall. The Animal & Veterinary row is therefore the check that carries weight on this page, and this row is kept because a register that was queried and found wanting is worth reporting as such.

Where the Royal Canin on an Indian shelf is actually made

Royal Canin sold in India is imported and declared French, and the answer is printed on the statutory block of the pack rather than anywhere on the brand's Indian website.

Six of seven Royal Canin dry dog food listings on Amazon.in declare France as their country of origin, in the plain English render, read on 9 October 2026. That is the single fact this page exists to establish, because four Indian search queries, thirty-three organic results and four Google AI Overviews do not contain it.

B002G0MSZ2, Maxi Puppy4 kgFranceFrance in the manufacturer field, France and South Africa in the packer field
B0019531W4, Medium Puppy1 kgNot stated. No origin attribute at allRoyal Canin SAS, no address

Two countries, one origin field. Four of the seven name both plants in the Manufacturer Contact Information field: "Royal Canin SAS, 650, Avenue, De La Petile, Aimargues, Camargues-BP4-30470, France & Royal Canin South Africa, Epson Avenue, North Riding, Randb Gautenq, South Africa";. The country-of-origin attribute on those same listings says France alone. On one listing, B002G0MSZ2, the manufacturer field names France and the packer field names France and South Africa, so two statutory fields on one page disagree about which countries are involved.

A buyer therefore cannot tell from the listing which of two plants on two continents made the bag. That is the same finding this research reached on Pedigree, where two sellers printed a Hungary, Thailand and India label, and it arrives here through a stronger route: not a seller's marketing copy but the legally required manufacturer declaration.

Both plant addresses are reproduced with errors in them

The French address prints as "650, Avenue, De La Petile, Aimargues, Camargues-BP4-30470", which reads as a mis-split of 650 Avenue de la Petite Camargue with a letter missing. The South African prints as "Epson Avenue, North Riding, Randb Gautenq", where North Riding is in Randburg, Gauteng. The point is not the spelling. The legally required manufacturer declaration for an imported food is reaching Indian buyers garbled, which makes the named facility harder to verify rather than easier.

The Indian importer, which the brand's own site does not name

Royal Canin India Pvt Ltd is named as importer on five of the seven listings, at "1401 & 1402, F Wing, 14th Floor, Lotus Corporate Park, Graham Firth Compound, Off Western Express Highway, Goregaon East, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India";. Nothing on royalcanin.com/in names that entity. An earlier research pass on this brand recorded the Indian legal entity as not established after reading the India site; the statutory block on every imported pack carries it.

One address, three PIN codes. Four listings give 400063, which is the correct PIN for Goregaon East. One gives 400092, on both its importer and its packer field. One gives 400075. The correct code is in the majority and two listings carry a wrong one, which means a reader cannot verify the importer's address from a single listing without already knowing which PIN is right.

What the brand's own pages say instead

The India site's history page ranks second in India on the direct question of where Royal Canin is made, and the passage Google surfaces from it reads "Royal Canin products are now sold in eight countries across Europe". That sentence sits under the heading 1974. The highest-ranking answer on the brand's own site to where its food comes from is a line about where it was sold fifty-two years ago. Its Quality and Food Safety page says "Every single shipment is checked before entering our production centres worldwide, and all of those facilities are equipped with state-of-the-art testing labs", and names no facility.

The brand says it has fifteen factories, so two named plants is not an answer

The same history page records that by 2009 Royal Canin had nine plants and manufactured "across every continent, except Antartica", the company's own spelling, and that its fifteenth factory opened in Gimje, South Korea in 2018. So the French and South African plants named on four Indian listings are two of at least fifteen. That makes the question of which plant filled a given bag harder rather than easier, and it is why this page establishes the declared country and stops there.

Google's own AI Overview, asked the question directly, lists manufacturing in the United States, Canada, Brazil and Argentina, does not mention India, and then offers twice in the same block to tell the reader "where specific Royal Canin products available in India are manufactured or imported from" rather than telling them. A post in a Canadian Facebook group, twenty comments long, shows a buyer in a different market on the same hunt, having telephoned a pet shop to try to find out.

Who owns Royal Canin

Royal Canin is owned by Mars, Incorporated, and unlike the ownership question on India's homegrown brands this one is openly stated by the company itself.

The owner is named in a press release filed on SEC EDGAR. The 2014 Mars and Procter & Gamble announcement of the Iams acquisition lists the acquirer's portfolio: "Mars brands include: Petcare - PEDIGREE, ROYAL CANIN, WHISKAS, BANFIELD Pet Hospital, NUTRO, SHEBA, DREAMIES and CESAR";. The same filing calls those brands "Mars Petcare's billion dollar stable mates". A filed document carries legal consequences for being wrong, which a website does not, so it is a stronger class of evidence and worth saying so.

The brand also dates the acquisition itself, and publishes the whole ownership chain. Its India history page carries a 2002 entry headed "A new family - Mars" with the line "ROYAL CANIN SAS is now part of Mars Inc.", and its footer reads "2026 Royal Canin SAS. All rights reserved. An Affiliate of Mars, Incorporated";. Wikipedia describes the company as "a division of the American group Mars Inc., and a French manufacturer and global supplier of cat and dog food";, and Royal Canin's LinkedIn page gives its manufacturing base as Aimargues, France. The French operating entity is Royal Canin SAS, the name printed in the manufacturer field of every listing above.

The ownership chain, from the brand's own history page, read 9 October 2026 Royal Canin India
YearWhat the page says
1968Jean Cathary, a French veterinarian born in 1927, creates the 'yellow soup' for dogs and the ROYAL CANIN brand is registered
1972The company is acquired by the Guyomarc'h group
1990Paribas Affaires Industrielles buys Guyomarc'h Groupe
2002ROYAL CANIN SAS becomes part of Mars Inc.

Four owners across fifty-eight years, dated and published by the company on its own Indian website. Set against the two brands this research has already examined, that is a markedly better disclosure record: Pedigree names its parent only in a footer copyright line, and Drools names no parent or investor anywhere on its site.

This brand discloses its parent, and that is worth saying

Royal Canin states its Mars ownership on its own website and dates it. Of the three brands this research has examined, it is the only one that does. Pedigree names the corporate parent only in a footer copyright line. Drools names no parent, no investor and no plant anywhere on its site, while claiming 42 years of experience under a heading called Our Story. Where a company does the straightforward thing, this page says so.

One question the search results keep asking, answered. The People Also Ask box on the direct origin query includes "Is Royal Canin owned by Pedigree?". No: neither owns the other. Both are Mars Petcare brands, named in the same sentence of the same 2014 filing, which makes them siblings under one owner rather than parent and subsidiary. Our Pedigree brand page sets out the same checks on that sibling. Mars also owns Whiskas, Sheba, Nutro, Cesar and Dreamies, all named in that one sentence, so several brands a shortlist treats as rivals share a parent.

Still not established is the CIN, the directors or the shareholding of Royal Canin India Pvt Ltd. The India site publishes four statutory disclosure links in its About Us footer, which is more than any other pet food site this research has checked, and two of them returned HTTP 404 when tested in August 2026. They have not been re-tested since. Form MGT-7 is filed with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, so the MCA record remains the place to get the entity details.

What Indian law requires, and why it requires more of this brand than of an Indian one

Pet food made in India faces no mandatory product standard, while pet food imported into India needs a permit and a health certificate, and Royal Canin is the imported case.

Pet food sits outside the Food Safety and Standards Act. The Act defines food as intended for human consumption and expressly excludes animal feed, and the Delhi High Court confirmed in April 2026 that it does not reach animal feed. That is why no FSSAI licence number appears on any Royal Canin pack panel, brand page or listing checked for this page, and why looking for one is looking for something a pet food business is not required to hold.

Ingredient declaration exists only in a voluntary standard. IS 11968:2019 is the Bureau of Indian Standards specification covering dry dog food. It is voluntary, no brand is obliged to follow it, and no Royal Canin product checked claims conformity to it or carries an ISI mark. Absence of a claim is not non-conformity and this page says only that no claim was found.

Here the import asymmetry stops being hypothetical

Pet food made in India has no mandatory product standard. Pet food imported into India needs a Sanitary Import Permit and a health certificate from the exporting country, and the Animal Quarantine and Certification Service lists pet foods as item 6 of nine on its high-risk list requiring that permit. Its checklist for importing livestock products also requires a country of origin certificate. On the Pedigree and Drools pages that asymmetry was noted as a general feature of Indian law. Royal Canin is the brand it actually bites on: this product is declared French, so it crossed a border, which means it cleared a documentary bar that a bag made in Chhattisgarh or Telangana does not have to clear at all.

The permit requirement comes from the Animal Quarantine and Certification Service's own procedures page, which states that the Sanitary Import Permit is "issued for high risk products" under a 2014 notification. The underlying order has not been read for this page, so the procedures page is named as the source and nothing further is claimed about the statute. Nor does this page claim to have seen a permit for any specific Royal Canin consignment; what it reports is the requirement that attaches to an imported pet food and the fact that this product is declared imported.

Whether that documentary bar makes the imported bag better is a different question, and this page does not answer it. A permit and a health certificate are paperwork about a consignment, not a verdict on nutrition. The honest statement is narrower and still useful: the imported product passes through a check that the domestic product does not, and the domestic product is subject to no mandatory standard in its place.

One more consequence of the same gap. Because pet food is outside the food-safety regime, the two Indian registers that would otherwise hold a withdrawal notice, the FSSAI FoSCoS food recall page and the Central Consumer Protection Authority, have no jurisdiction over this product and neither returned anything searchable by brand for any pet food brand.

The American rule Indian searchers keep being handed

The People Also Ask box on this brand's head term asks "What is the 95% rule in dog food?". It asked the same thing on the Drools head term. That is an American ingredient-naming rule written by the Association of American Feed Control Officials, and it has no Indian equivalent. Twice now, on two unrelated brands, Indian buyers have been served a foreign regulator's concept because their own framework has nothing to serve, which makes it a finding about the vacuum rather than a quirk of one search.

What the recall registers actually returned

Two registers were searched and both returned nothing for Royal Canin, and for the first time in this research that zero means something, because the brand is demonstrably inside the register's scope.

The US FDA Animal and Veterinary recalls listing returned zero rows for Royal Canin, searched on 9 October 2026. An empty results table is not by itself proof of zero, so the identical scrape was re-run with a control on the same day.

The FDA Animal and Veterinary listing, identical method, 9 October 2026 US FDA, Animal & Veterinary Recalls &…
QueryResultWhat it establishes
search_api_fulltext=royal caninNo rows renderedThe nil under test
search_api_fulltext=pedigree, the control"Showing 1 to 2 of 2 entries" with a full tableThe instrument works, so the Royal Canin nil is a real nil and not a failed scrape
Why this zero carries weight and the Indian brands' zeros did not

On Drools, an FDA zero said almost nothing, because nothing established that Drools is sold in the United States at all, and an India-only brand returns zero from every American register by construction. Royal Canin is different. Petfood Industry describes Royal Canin U.S. as a subsidiary of Mars, and Google's AI Overview lists United States manufacturing among the brand's plants, so Royal Canin product is within this register's jurisdiction. A zero inside the register's three-year window is therefore a real result about the brand rather than an artefact of geography.

Two limits on it, both of which matter. FDA's own parent page states that recalls stay on the site for three years before being archived, so this is a statement about the current window and not about the brand's history. And the Indian product is declared French and South African made, not American, so even a US recall would not automatically have covered the bag on an Indian shelf, and the absence of one says nothing about French or South African production. The jurisdictionally correct register for a French-made food is the European Union's rapid alert system, which has not been searched for this page and is the most useful single thing a later pass could add.

The openFDA food enforcement API returned zero for royal canin, royal canin sas and mars petcare, and its controls show why that nil is unusable rather than reassuring. A search of the whole endpoint for dog food returns two records in total, both for one American company in 2019. Cat food returns nothing. A search for pedigree returns zero here while FDA's own Animal and Veterinary listing returns two dated Pedigree recalls on the same day, so this endpoint misses recalls its own regulator publishes elsewhere.

A reader is actively asking about this. "Is there a recall of Royal Canin products in 2026?" appears in the People Also Ask box on the quality query. The answer this page can give is precise: no entry appears for this brand in the FDA Animal and Veterinary listing's current three-year window as at 9 October 2026, that listing covers United States distribution, and no Indian register exists with jurisdiction to search.

What Royal Canin costs, per kilogram

Royal Canin runs from about Rs 610 to about Rs 1,196 per kilogram in India, and the most useful thing a buyer can know is that three of the six sellers are not worth comparing against each other.

Three sellers price within one rupee of each other, across roughly forty separate SKUs, on the same day. Zigly, Supertails and Heads Up For Tails sit at Rs 10,243.00 each for Rottweiler Adult 12 kg, Rs 6,908.00 each for Maxi Adult 10 kg, Rs 11,660.00 each for Maxi Starter 15 kg, Rs 3,124.00 each for Pug Adult 3 kg, and Rs 3,555.00, Rs 3,555.00 and Rs 3,556.00 for Maxi Puppy 4 kg. The pattern repeats on about forty groups at once.

What this page will and will not conclude from that

Forty simultaneous matches is not coincidence, and one detail sharpens it: Zigly's figures repeatedly carry non-round paise, such as Rs 2,806.79, Rs 3,713.81 and Rs 10,577.81, which is the signature of a percentage computed off a base figure rather than a price set by hand. But a single published list price with a conventional discount applied independently by each seller would produce exactly this result innocently, and none of the three publishes a list price for this brand. So this page states the pattern and asserts no mechanism. The Pedigree pass is why: three sellers shared an identical Pedigree PRO figure in August and only one still did six weeks later. What is different here is the scale, not the certainty.

The useful version for a buyer is simple. Comparing those three against each other on Royal Canin is close to pointless, and the entire available saving sits with the other sellers.

Royal Canin Maxi Puppy 4 kg across six sellers, 9 October 2026 VetAllies, Royal Canin collection

Heads Up For TailsRs 3,556.00Rs 889.00Yes

VetAllies is cheapest on roughly 38 of the 45 groups measured, and that is exactly why you should check rather than assume. On Maxi Starter 15 kg it is the dearest of five at Rs 12,587.50 while Petsworld is cheapest at Rs 11,262.00. On Golden Retriever Adult 12 kg, Petsworld asks Rs 12,728.00 against VetAllies' Rs 8,840.00, which is 44 percent more and the widest single-SKU spread found on this brand. A seller that is cheapest nine times out of ten can be 44 percent out on the tenth.

The pack ladder behaves exactly as you would expect, which is the fourth different answer in four brands

Royal Canin's price per kilogram falls cleanly as the pack grows. From one seller's own range: Maxi Adult is Rs 765.00 per kilogram at 1 kg, Rs 722.50 at 4 kg, Rs 650.30 at 10 kg and Rs 623.33 at 15 kg. Mini Adult runs Rs 871.25 at 800 g down to Rs 680.00 at 8 kg.

That is worth naming because it is the fourth distinct outcome across four brands. Pedigree had a 15 kg bag that cost more in total than its own 20 kg. Drools displayed prices for two volume packs that could not be bought. A third brand's multipack cost more than its own components. Royal Canin does the ordinary thing. Four brands, four answers, so price per kilogram has to be computed every time and cannot be inferred from how another brand behaved. Our dog diet chart for India covers how much food a given weight of dog needs, which is the other half of the sum.

How this compares with the Indian brands, at comparable volume

At the volume end of each brand's own range, Royal Canin Giant Adult 15 kg is Rs 609.20 per kilogram and Maxi Adult 15 kg is Rs 623.33. Drools Optimum Performance Adult 20 kg is Rs 108.20 and Pedigree Adult Chicken and Vegetables 20 kg is Rs 155.75. So Royal Canin is roughly 5.6 times Drools and 3.9 times Pedigree per kilogram, comparing each brand's cheapest large pack with each other's.

What that multiple does and does not tell you

It tells you the size of the decision. Feeding a 30 kg dog on Royal Canin rather than Pedigree is a four-fold difference in the food bill, and that is worth knowing before a vet or a breeder recommends a brand. It does not tell you whether the food is four times better, because this page runs no tests and makes no quality judgement. Two things are genuinely different between them and neither settles the question: the Royal Canin is imported and crossed a documentary border check, and the largest common Royal Canin pack found is 15 kg against the Indian brands' 20 kg, so part of the gap is pack size.

The dearest per kilogram found is Shih Tzu Adult in a 500 g pack at Rs 1,170.00 to Rs 1,196.00, and Pug Adult 1.5 kg at Rs 1,144.00 across three sellers. Small breed plus small pack is the most expensive combination on the brand, at close to double its own volume rate.

On this brand the storage question costs more to get wrong

The 15 kg bag is where the per-kilogram rate is best, and it is also a Rs 9,350 commitment. A dog eating 300 g a day finishes 15 kg in 50 days; at 150 g a day it takes 100 days. A household in Mumbai or Chennai buying before the monsoon is then storing an open bag through heat and humidity, and on a food at Rs 623 per kilogram the cost of spoiling the last third is not trivial. Follow the storage instruction on the pack rather than any figure here, and treat the volume saving as real only over what you will use while it is good. The small-breed ranges make this sharper, because an 8 kg Mini Adult bag feeding a 5 kg dog lasts a very long time.

No seller publishes a barcode. Across 1,327 priced variants from five Shopify sellers, not one published an EAN, so every comparison above is matched on product line, life stage and declared pack weight. That is good evidence of same-pack identity and it is not proof. Amazon publishes GTINs but gives two of them on some listings, so a barcode match would not settle it there either.

The breed-specific range costs more than the size-specific one

For the same dog, Royal Canin sells both a size-band food and a breed-named food, and the breed-named version costs between 7 and 23 percent more per kilogram.

This matters because the breed range is the brand's most distinctive feature and because our readers arrive here from breed pages. Royal Canin segments first by size, with X-Small, Mini, Medium, Maxi and Giant bands, and then again by breed, with separate foods for the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Rottweiler, Boxer, Beagle, Pug, Cocker Spaniel and Shih Tzu among others.

Cheapest price per kilogram at volume, size-band against breed-named, 9 October 2026 VetAllies, Royal Canin collection
FoodPackCheapest per kg foundPremium over Maxi Adult
Maxi Adult, for dogs 26 to 44 kg10 kgRs 650.30the baseline
Beagle Adult12 kgRs 697.757.3 percent
German Shepherd Adult11 kgRs 734.0912.9 percent
Golden Retriever Adult12 kgRs 736.6713.3 percent
Labrador Retriever Adult12 kgRs 757.9216.5 percent
Rottweiler Adult12 kgRs 798.7522.8 percent

A Labrador owner is sold both. A Labrador of 30 kg falls inside the Maxi band, so Maxi Adult suits it on the brand's own size logic, and the brand also sells a Labrador Retriever Adult at 16.5 percent more per kilogram. Whether the breed formulation justifies the premium is a question for a tested review and this page does not answer it. That the premium exists, and how big it is for each breed, is a fact a buyer is entitled to before choosing, and no page found states it.

The pack sizes differ too, which is part of why the comparison needs care: the size bands come in 1 kg, 4 kg, 10 kg and 15 kg, while the breed foods come in 500 g, 1 kg, 1.5 kg, 3 kg, 7.5 kg, 11 kg and 12 kg. There is no 15 kg breed pack, so a buyer who wants the cheapest per kilogram cannot get it in the breed range at all.

Our breed pages cover what each of these dogs actually needs. The brand also publishes its own breed content, and a manufacturer writing about which food suits a breed has an interest in the answer, which is the standing position on this site.

What the listings and directories say, and why most of it cannot be trusted

The structured attributes on these listings contain claims that are false on their face, and two of the directory pages ranking for this brand in India were generated from templates with no matching data in them.

Report these as what the page says, attributed to the page, never as a judgement of the food. They are evidence about the state of Indian pet food retail, which is part of this page's subject.

  • "Allergen Information: Allergen-Free" on five of the seven listings. These are cereal-based extruded kibbles with named salmon oil. Allergen-free is not a property any of them has, and the identical false attribute appeared on Pedigree's listings.
  • "Animal Food Diet Type: Limited Ingredient" on all seven. Royal Canin's size and breed range is not a limited-ingredient line. The same attribute appeared on every Drools listing checked, which suggests a marketplace default rather than a brand claim.
  • "Animal Food Ingredient Claim: Additive-Free" on four, including one whose own Additional Features field advertises a "patented antioxidant complex".
  • B00LNB5NVG contradicts itself on weight. Its title says 1 kg, its Unit Count says 1000.0 Grams and its Item Weight says 800 Grams. Any price per kilogram taken from that listing is unreliable, which is why it is reported here and excluded from the comparison tables.
  • The same listing calls a Maxi food small-breed. B00LNB5NVG is Maxi Adult, the range for dogs of 26 to 44 kg, and its Dog Breed Size attribute reads Small.
  • "Container Type: Tin" on B0015SDBUM, a 4 kg bag of dry kibble.
  • "Recommended Uses For Product" includes the bare phrase "Veterinarian-Recommended"; on B0015SDBUM, which puts an unattributed veterinary claim inside a structured attribute field rather than in marketing copy where a reader would discount it.

Two directory pages built from nothing

Justdial holds four of the top ten places across two of this brand's Indian queries, with four separately generated category pages, and one of them is for "Royal Canin Animal Meal", which is not a product. Its price snippets are also wrong by most of an order of magnitude: it states "Giant Adult Dog Food (15 kg) Rs 1.88 K - Rs 2 K", which works out at Rs 125 to Rs 133 per kilogram, against the Rs 609 to Rs 1,196 per kilogram measured across six sellers on the same day. A lead-generation directory ranking that highly on a brand's own name is publishing prices five to eight times too low.

The worst example, from an earlier pass on this brand

A trade-data site, seair.co.in, publishes a page titled "Royal canin Importers in India | Trusted List of Shipment" whose snippet reads "Country of origin China Manufacturer ROYAL CANIN SAS". That snippet supports a dramatic claim, that Royal Canin sold in India is made in China. It is false and the page shows it on inspection. The page contains no Indian shipments at all; its three rows are Kazakhstan, Peru and Ukraine. The China line is a Ukraine shipment of cat grooming brushes. And the page is generated from a template for a different product entirely: its own keywords meta reads "Plastic Glue buyers, Adhesive Importers India" and its own FAQ advises readers to verify the code based on "adhesive composition". Royal Canin has been substituted into an adhesives page. Read the rows. A country named in a title is not a country present in the data.

A domain also needs flagging rather than linking. Google's AI Overview for the head term cites royalcaninin.com, titled "Royal Canin India". The company's Indian presence is royalcanin.com/in. Whether that other domain is the company's has not been established and nothing from it is used on this page.

Who currently answers the question, and why that is a problem

On the Indian search for whether this food is good for dogs, the top seven results contain an essay mill, a content farm, a fifteen-year-old trade article and a seven-year-old video, and not one vet, test or cited analysis.

The result set, read on 9 October 2026, runs: a Petfood Industry article from June 2011 whose snippet is the company's own positioning restated; Amazon; the brand's own page; a YouTube video seven years old; a Facebook auto-generated answers page that misspells the brand as "Royal Canine" in its own title and URL; bartleby.com, which sells homework help, ranking a student essay sixth; and apsense.com, an article-marketing content farm, seventh.

Nothing in that list was published in India except the brand's own page and two marketplaces. Nothing in it reports a test, and nothing in it is independent of either the manufacturer or a seller. The Facebook page's own snippet concedes the state of the evidence rather well: "Royal Canine gets mixed reviews, many vets recommend it and some dogs do well on it for years, but a lot of owners say it's overpriced with low-quality...".

Google's AI Overview fills that vacuum with a flat "Yes, Royal Canin is considered a high-quality, evidence-backed dog food brand", and names its sources: a Reddit thread, a Quora answer and a Substack newsletter. It also asserts that the brand complies with World Small Animal Veterinary Association guidelines. That claim may well be true and it is not repeated here, because supporting it would need the guideline document and the company's own disclosure, and the AI Overview cites neither.

Where this page stops

This hub establishes who owns the brand, where each pack declares it was made, who imports it, what it costs per kilogram at every seller found, and what each register returned on a dated search. It makes no quality judgement and no recommendation, so it cannot answer "is Royal Canin good for dogs", "which is better, Purina or Royal Canin" or "why do breeders recommend Royal Canin", all three of which sit in the People Also Ask box. Our how we test page sets out what a verdict will require when the reviews section opens.

Bonbeno sells no pet food and takes no payment for a finding. A brand may buy a labelled placement on this site and may never buy a fact, which includes the origin section, the importer's name, what each register returned, the wording of anything in not-established, and the removal of any finding. This page is not sponsored.

How to read this page

Read every figure as true on the date beside it, and read every absence as a search that was run and came back empty rather than a question nobody asked.

Prices came from five sellers' own Shopify variant data and from each Amazon listing opened directly, not from a scrape of a rendered grid, because in a grid the nearest figure to a product name is often the next product's. Amazon figures were read with the delivery location set to Mumbai 400001, and Amazon prices and availability are location dependent. Where a pack was out of stock, no price is recorded for it even when one was displayed.

Every rupee figure was divided by 84.38 and by 74 to check whether it resolves to a round dollar price. None does, which is worth confirming on an imported brand where a converted euro or dollar list price would be a plausible mechanism. The prices are rupee-native.

The eleven not-established entries below are findings, not gaps. Each records what was looked for, where, why it is not established, and the positive test that would settle it. Where a register returned nothing, the control search is printed beside it, because a nil from an instrument that returns nothing for anything is worth nothing.

This page asserts no rating of its own. Where a retailer's displayed customer rating is reported, such as the 4.4 from 8,691 ratings on the Mini Adult listing, it is reported as a fact about that listing on that date and not adopted as a judgement. A brand hub establishes who, where, how much and what each register returned, and leaves whether the food is any good to a tested review.

What we could not establish

The 11 questions below are the ones this page could not answer, and they are published rather than left out. Each one names what was looked for, where, why it could not be settled, and the test that would show it if the answer were there.

Which of the two named plants made a given bag

A single plant for a single pack

Looked in: four of seven Amazon.in listings, whose manufacturer field names a French AND a South African facility while the country-of-origin attribute says France alone, ASIN B002G0MSZ2, whose manufacturer field names France and whose packer field names France and South Africa, royalcanin.com/in/about-us/quality-and-food-safety, which refers to 'our production centres worldwide' and names none, royalcanin.com/in/about-us/our-history, whose highest-ranking passage on origin is a 1974 entry about eight European countries, and which records nine plants by 2009 and a fifteenth factory opening in South Korea in 2018

Why it could not be settled: The country of origin is established as France on six of seven listings, which is the question this page set out to answer. What is not established is which facility made a particular pack. Four listings name two plants on two continents and nothing distinguishes them, and the brand's own history page says it operates at least fifteen factories on every continent but Antarctica, so the two named are a subset of a much larger estate. A buyer holding a bag cannot tell which filled it.

What would show otherwise: A batch or lot code on the pack panel resolves to one plant in the manufacturer's own records, and a photograph of the statutory panel would show which single facility that pack names.

The CIN, directors and shareholding of Royal Canin India Pvt Ltd

The company's own annual return and master data from the statutory record

Looked in: the India site's About Us footer, which publishes four statutory disclosure links, more than any other Indian pet food site checked, two of those links, the Annual Return for 2021-22 and for 2022-23, which both returned HTTP 404 when tested in August 2026 on both the host the footer links to and the public host, using the site's own URL encoding, the other two links, a CSR Action Plan and CSR Spending, which were never tested, the MCA master-data record, which has not been read

Why it could not be settled: The entity NAME and address are now established from the statutory block of five imported listings. The filings behind it are not. Do not write that this company conceals its filings: it links them, which is the opposite of concealment, and more than its competitors do. What is true is that a reader following those links in August got a 404, so the filings were not in practice available from the site, and the links have not been re-tested since.

What would show otherwise: The MCA master-data page for the company name would print the CIN, the registered-office state and the activity class, and a working annual-return link would print the directors and shareholding.

Which PIN code the importer's Mumbai address actually carries

One PIN for one street address

Looked in: four listings giving 400063, which is the PIN for Goregaon East, ASIN B000WIN2NM giving 400092 on both its importer and its packer field, ASIN B00LNB5NVG giving 400075 on its packer field

Why it could not be settled: One address is printed with three different PIN codes across seven listings of one brand. The correct one appears to be in the majority, but this page does not assert which is right on the basis of a majority vote, and two listings carry something else. It means a reader cannot verify the importer's address from a single listing.

What would show otherwise: The company's own filings or its India site would print the registered address once, with one PIN.

Whether Royal Canin India holds an FSSAI licence, and whether one is required for an imported pet food

A licence number on the pack panel, the brand site or any listing, and the licensing route for an imported pet food

Looked in: royalcanin.com/in and its About Us pages, all seven Amazon.in listing attribute blocks, 1,327 priced variants across five Indian Shopify sellers

Why it could not be settled: No FSSAI licence number appears in any of those places. Pet food sits outside the Food Safety and Standards Act, which excludes animal feed, so no licence is required of a pet food business as such. For an IMPORTED pet food the relevant route is the Animal Quarantine and Certification Service permit regime rather than FSSAI, and whether any additional import licensing applies has not been established.

What would show otherwise: A licence number would be printed on the statutory panel and return a matching entity in a FoSCoS search, or the AQCS would publish a permit register naming the importer.

Whether a Sanitary Import Permit exists for any specific Royal Canin consignment

A permit, or a register of permits, naming this importer

Looked in: the Animal Quarantine and Certification Service procedures page, which establishes the requirement and lists pet foods as item 6 of nine on the high-risk list, no public permit register was located

Why it could not be settled: The requirement is established and the product is declared imported, so the requirement attaches. This page has NOT seen a permit for any consignment and does not claim the requirement was met in any particular case. Saying 'imported product clears a documentary bar' describes the regime, not a verified shipment, and the difference matters.

What would show otherwise: A searchable AQCS permit register, or a permit number printed on an import document or pack, would show a specific consignment cleared.

Whether the European Union rapid alert system holds anything for this brand

A register with jurisdiction over French-made pet food

Looked in: not searched for this page

Why it could not be settled: This is the most useful single gap on this page and it is recorded rather than glossed. The Indian product is declared French, so the jurisdictionally correct register is the European Union's, not the American one this page could search. The FDA nil covers United States distribution of a brand whose Indian product is not American-made. Until the EU system is searched with a passing control, this page's recall coverage is incomplete and says so.

What would show otherwise: A search of the EU rapid alert system for this brand, with a control proving the system returns hits for comparable pet food notifications, would either produce dated entries or a nil worth printing.

Whether any Royal Canin product claims conformity to IS 11968:2019

A BIS reference, an ISI mark or an IS 11968 claim

Looked in: royalcanin.com/in and its About Us pages, all seven Amazon.in listings and 1,327 seller variants

Why it could not be settled: No claim was found anywhere. Absence of a claim is not non-conformity, and this page says only that no claim was found. IS 11968:2019 is voluntary and no brand is obliged to follow it. Whether a voluntary Indian standard would even be the relevant reference for a product manufactured in France has not been established.

What would show otherwise: A conformity claim would appear as an ISI mark on the pack panel and as a licence row in the BIS directory.

Why three sellers price within one rupee of each other across roughly forty SKUs

A published list price or MRP that would explain the clustering innocently

Looked in: the variant data of all five Shopify sellers, none of which publishes a compare-at price for this brand, the Amazon listings, which publish a list price but for different pack sizes

Why it could not be settled: The pattern is systematic and not coincidental, and Zigly's recurring non-round paise point to a percentage computed off a common base. But a single published list price with a conventional discount applied independently by each seller would produce the same result with no coordination at all, and that list price is not published on those pages. So the mechanism is not established and this page asserts none. The Pedigree pass is the precedent for the restraint: three sellers shared an identical figure there in August and only one still did six weeks later.

What would show otherwise: The MRP printed on the pack, compared against each seller's price, would show whether all three are applying the same discount to one list price.

Whether the brand meets World Small Animal Veterinary Association guidelines

The guideline document and the company's own compliance disclosure

Looked in: Google's AI Overview for the quality query, which asserts compliance and cites a Reddit thread, a Quora answer and a Substack newsletter, royalcanin.com/in, which was not found to make the claim in those terms on the pages read

Why it could not be settled: The claim is widely repeated and may well be true. It is not repeated here because supporting it needs the guidelines themselves and a company statement, and the only source asserting it cites a forum, a question-and-answer site and a newsletter. Neither adopting nor contradicting it would be honest on that evidence.

What would show otherwise: The WSAVA guidelines document plus a dated company statement addressing each criterion would settle it either way.

Whether royalcaninin.com is the company's

Ownership of a domain presenting itself as Royal Canin India

Looked in: Google's AI Overview for the head term, which cites it with the title 'Royal Canin India', royalcanin.com/in, the company's established Indian presence, which was not found to link to it

Why it could not be settled: A domain spelling the brand name plus a country suffix and presenting itself as the brand's Indian site is either the company's or it is not, and which it is matters to a buyer deciding whether they are on an official page. It is not established here, so nothing from it is used on this page and it is not linked.

What would show otherwise: A link from royalcanin.com to that domain, or a registrant record naming the company, would settle it.

Whether the breed-specific formulations differ enough to justify their premium

A comparison of the breed food against the size-band food a buyer could use instead

Looked in: the price data, which establishes the premium at 7 to 23 percent per kilogram, no ingredient or nutrient comparison was made for this page

Why it could not be settled: The premium is established. Whether it buys anything is a question about formulation and outcome, which needs the two ingredient panels side by side at minimum and a tested comparison to answer properly. This hub makes no quality judgement, so it states the premium and stops.

What would show otherwise: The two statutory panels, breed food and size-band food, read side by side would show what differs in the declared composition.

Common questions

Royal Canin is made in which country?

The Royal Canin sold in India is imported. Six of seven Amazon.in dry dog food listings declare France as the country of origin, and four of those name a South African plant alongside the French one in the manufacturer field, so a buyer cannot tell which of the two made their bag. Royal Canin India Pvt Ltd of Mumbai is named as importer.

Who is the owner of Royal Canin?

Mars, Incorporated. A press release filed on SEC EDGAR in 2014 lists ROYAL CANIN among Mars Petcare brands, and the brand's own India history page dates the acquisition: "2002: A new family - Mars. ROYAL CANIN SAS is now part of Mars Inc." The French operating entity, Royal Canin SAS, is named on the statutory block of every imported pack.

Is Royal Canin owned by Pedigree?

No, and neither owns the other. Both are Mars Petcare brands, named in the same sentence of the same 2014 SEC-filed press release, which makes them siblings under one owner rather than parent and subsidiary. Mars also owns Whiskas, Sheba, Nutro, Cesar and Dreamies, so several brands a shortlist treats as competitors share a parent.

Why is Royal Canin costly?

This page does not explain the pricing, which would require the company's cost structure. It does establish the size of the gap: Rs 609 to Rs 1,196 per kilogram against Drools at Rs 108 and Pedigree at Rs 156 for their cheapest 20 kg packs. Two differences are checkable, that this product is imported, and that its largest common pack is 15 kg rather than 20 kg.

Is there a recall of Royal Canin products in 2026?

No entry appears for this brand in the US FDA Animal and Veterinary recalls listing as at 9 October 2026, checked with a control that returned two rows for another brand on the same day. That listing holds three years of records and covers United States distribution. The Indian product is declared French, so the European register would be the relevant one and has not been searched.

Is Royal Canin a good quality dog food?

This page makes no quality judgement, because a verdict needs testing it does not do. The Indian search results for that question offer a fifteen-year-old trade article, a seven-year-old video, an essay-mill page and a content farm, with no vet, test or cited analysis among them. Our how we test page sets out what a verdict will require.

What is the price of Royal Canin?

Between Rs 609.20 and Rs 1,196.00 per kilogram across the twenty-four seller prices recorded here on 9 October 2026, depending on line, pack size and seller. The cheapest is Giant Adult in a 15 kg bag and the dearest is Shih Tzu Adult in a 500 g pack. Three of the six sellers price within one rupee of each other, so the saving sits with the other three.

Which dog food is best for Indian dogs?

This page does not rank brands and makes no recommendation. What it offers is the comparable evidence across the brands covered here: who owns each, what each pack declares as its country of origin, what each recall register returned on a dated search, and the price per kilogram at every seller found. Compare those, with your own vet on the nutrition.

Why do breeders recommend Royal Canin?

This page cannot answer why any individual recommends a brand, and it repeats no veterinary or breeder endorsement, because none it found names who made it. One of the seven Amazon listings puts the bare phrase "Veterinarian-Recommended" inside a structured attribute field with no name attached, which is exactly the kind of unattributed claim this site declines to carry.

Bonbeno is an independent pet reference for India. We do not sell pet food, products or animals. Organic rankings are earned on verified data and paid placement is always labelled.
